BOO!
Sweet girl Artie (aka Boo) came into the facility rather timid/fearful and not seeming to have had much experience on a leash, but she has a good attitude, loves the attention she is getting from volunteers and is learning quickly.
AWW!
Came into the shelter with buddy Sully (Charlie), an adoptable miniature Aussie. The two show no food aggression, often taking one treat with both mouths at the same time. They don't show a great deal of bonding to each other, though, so we are planning to adopt them out separately.
LOVES KIDDOS!
Came from a home with children and let them hang all over her.
LOTS of LOVE!
Getting some TLC and routine vet care and will be available for adoption soon.
MEET/ADOPT!
Call 913-684-4939 to schedule an appointment.
Visit at 510 Organ Ave. 11-4 MWF.
E-mail fortleavenworthstrayfacility@gmail.com for an adoption application.
HEINZ 57???
We don't know what breeds of dog Artie is -- whippet is listed just because she is about that size (about 30-40 pounds) and when she bounds across the play yard, she reminds us of a greyhound. This pretty girl could be a mix of lab, pointer, terrier, all of the above, who knows...
Meet Artemis (aka Boo)

Our adoption process takes about 24 hours, unless prior arrangements have been made. Each applicant is required to submit two personal references and one veterinarian reference (if first time pet owner that is waived). Please email us for the adoption application form.
We also ask that an adopter's dog and the adoptable dog meet each other prior to finalizing the adoption. This is to protect you and both the dogs. We have an exercise yard and are happy to introduce them there while monitoring closely.
Adoption of multiple pets may qualify for an adoption fee discount if the fee is not already reduced.

Summer hours: Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. open to the public; closed Sunday and Monday. If these hours do not work with your schedule please don't hesitate to contact us. We have volunteers who are willing to meet outside of those hours for serious inquiries.
Our volunteers and adoptable pets can be seen at several public events such as the Fort Leavenworth PAIR Day (please stop by our booth/table and meet some of our volunteers and the furbabies they bring), running/walking with adoptable dogs in races and dropping by the farm supply store with an adoptable dog in tow or strolling through the farmer's market to help socialized dogs and find them matches.
We always need volunteers! Please contact us if you are interested. Commitment can range from a lot to not much time at all. We need help with regular shifts to care for animals, covering hours of operation, cleaning kennels, walking dogs, cuddling kittens, etc.

More about this shelter
Our facility is overseen by FMWR but is all volunteer staffed. We pride ourselves on the level of dedication as we are there for the love of the pets. Our volunteer duties range from walking dogs to cleaning kennels to volunteer recruitment and coordination.
We are proud to say we do not euthanize for need of space. We are a low-kill facility in that we minimize it to medical issues and extreme behavior issues. We have treated dogs for heartworm and other treatable medical issues to make them adoptable; we do not base our decisions on a pre-set rule but a guideline that allows us to handle every pet on a case-by-case basis.
