My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

MOOKIE: LOW RIDER, WALLFLOWER, ICON
Fostered in NJ | Fully vetted, neutered, chipped
Apply at houndsinpounds.org

Introducing Mookie: 66 lbs of introverted charm, wrapped in a handsome devil’s body and powered by exactly two speeds—slow and no. This 5-year-old low rider bully is so quiet, you might mistake him for a throw pillow. Or a decorative ottoman. Or the wallpaper. He’s not offended. He prefers it that way.

MOOKIE FACTS:
Sweet enough to give you cavities—like he’s made of sugar and sprinkled with cinnamon
Handsome devil with a derpy soul and a body built for lounging
Good with dogs, especially the chill ones who respect his need for silence and personal space
Scared of cats—like, “please don’t make eye contact with the feline” scared
Lazy in a way that feels aspirational (your couch will never be alone again)
Quiet enough to make your houseplants seem chatty
Introverted and thriving—not here to “work on that”
Looking forward to pumpkin picking, ideally from the couch
Will need help with confidence, but responds well to snacks and whispered affirmations
Doesn’t bark, doesn’t beg, doesn’t believe in cardio
A status symbol for people who understand that silence is golden and low riders are elite

Mookie won’t chase squirrels, fetch balls, or entertain your guests. He will make you feel like the luckiest human alive every time he chooses to sit near you and sigh dramatically. He’s not here for drama, group activities, or extroverted nonsense. He’s a vibe. A lifestyle. A four-legged flex.

We’re accepting applications from people who live in places where introverts are celebrated and couches are sacred: NY, NJ, CT, PA, ME, VT, VA, DE, MD, DC, RI, NH.

Additional adoption info

Our mission is to find the best possible homes for the animals in our care. Many of them have been through severe hardship, mistreatment or neglect, and that makes it even more important that we do our best for them. This means that we have to have guidelines because not every adopter is right for every animal. We try to do right by every person who comes our way looking for a new family pet. But sometimes we have to say “no” to a potential adopter. Our animals do not have a say in where they go; since we speak for those who have no voice, we must do it well. Our rejection of an adoption application is no reflection on the adopter. Everyone who wants to adopt an animal from a shelter or rescue group is special because they open their homes to those in need. But, while we try to meet the needs of everyone, our clients are the animals. They have no one else. We appreciate your understanding.

More about this rescue

The mission of Hounds in Pounds (HIP), is to end the daily killing of thousands of adoptable dogs in the United States. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New Jersey and Georgia and we rely 100% on donations.

HIP has a multi-faceted approach to achieving our mission, combining rescue, adoption, spay/neuter outreach and public education. Dogs rescued by Hounds in Pounds are transported to private veterinarians for proper medical treatment, where they are vetted, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and tested for heartworm before being placed into new, loving homes. We work as a team, communicating from sunrise to sundown to manage the many moving pieces that make our work successful.

Each dog we pull to safety is a member of our family and is treated with the utmost love and respect. We are a lifeline for thousands of dogs that otherwise wouldn’t stand a chance. Many of the dogs we rescue are cases that no one else will take, as our motto at HIP is to “never say never”. To be clear, we are working for them. These dogs are our heroes, and we look to them for hope, inspiration and sometimes the strength to keep going. We also consider our followers, donors, adopters, rescue partners and the rescue community a direct extension of our team. Without each of these moving parts, Hounds in Pounds wouldn’t be able to do what we do.

As one can imagine, the costs associated with running an operation of this magnitude are extraordinary. We fulfill our mission by collaborating with local shelters, veterinarians, boarding facilities, transporters, and local businesses, and through the generosity of donors and supporters. It is thanks to our dedicated volunteers and the benevolent donations of our HIP family of supporters that any of this is possible.
