This helps Red Fern Animal Rescue with pet care costs.
Luka was found by a Good Samaritan while at work in the rural town of Wortham, Texas, but they couldn't keep him, so he was surrendered to the small local shelter. Unfortunately Luka, and all the animals at the shelter, have little prospects as the shelter does little to no adoptions. There is a small group of individuals in Wortham that work tirelessly to network (and vet, on a very limited budget) these animals to foster-based rescues in and out of Texas that are willing to consider them. Red Fern was contacted by one of these volunteers who, together with her high school daughter, go to the holding facility every day to walk the dogs, socialize them, take them to the vet, and just spend quality time with them.
Luka is very outgoing and active and truly has a great personality. He LOVES to play with other dogs. His best friend is a German Shepherd named Trixie who is also available for adoption, so if you're looking for a pair- you've found them!
From the shelter volunteer who asked us to save these dogs: "He absolutely loves my daughter, she’s 15; every time he sees her he starts talking and talking and talking and he’s just so full of excitement when he sees her- he’s like a big child. Once he knows he’s safe, he is so loyal. He has gotten out of the main door a few times and it was just because he wanted to be by me. He could’ve ran away at any moment but he doesn’t, he stays right by my side- very, very loyal. He is the welcoming committee to all the new dogs. Every new dog that comes in is usually scared and he always goes to their kennel to comfort them. He’s quirky. He’s funny. He’s silly. He’s so cute. It makes up for the naughty things he does."
On that note, a couple things... typical Husky, Luka does not like to be enclosed in a small area for any length of time, he will dig out or climb a fence, so a strong plan in place is needed to keep him safe, secure and with you! He is also destructive to loose objects- keep them secure! Once you figure out what chews and toys and activities he likes, Luka should be able to be redirected to these instead.
