Truckee is a four-year-old German Shepherd mix who firmly believes he's a 55-lb lap dog. He approaches with his head tucked in and gently paws at you for attention, then trots around when he’s excited, following you everywhere to supervise your tasks.
He settled into home life right away, fully house-trained and crate-trained. Truckee sleeps comfortably in his crate at night and stays in it when left alone, entering it on command like a pro. He came into foster care underweight and a little unsure, so he still looks for food, but he’s learning quickly that meals and love are consistent and safe.
Truckee is gentle with everyone he meets though he will need to learn more confidence when making new friends. He is curious about other dogs and cats, though unsure, so a proper introduction is recommended. He’s also been kind to all people, but does not have a lot of experience with young kids.
Truckee is energetic, loves anything outdoors, and gets two walks a day plus lots of yard time. He adores his tennis balls—fetch, chewing, carrying them around—you name it. He will require a fenced yard due to his energy level and can jump quite high.

The adoption fee is $450. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter, heartworm/Lyme test, all age-appropriate vaccinations (distemper, rabies, and Bordetella), heartworm and flea/tick preventatives, and microchip implant (including registration). Adoption fees INCLUDE a mandatory sales tax of 7.525%. Age and breed are based on veterinarian and intake professional’s recommendation and not guaranteed as a rescue animal’s history is often unknown. Due to post-adoption services provided, we prefer to adopt within a 150-mile radius of the Twin Cities. However, we will consider up to 250 miles if the foster agrees to travel requirements and staff approval.

What We Do
We help dogs and cats find homes with loving families through foster-based care. Every dog and cat lives with a foster family until they find their forever families. We provide all of their basic needs including proper food, veterinary care, behavior training, and supplies.
Through in-home fostering, we learn about each animal’s temperament, personality, likes/dislikes, and any medical needs. With this first-hand information, we can then find the right family for each dog and cat.
Our volunteers also educate the public on responsible companion animal care and represent respect for animals at all times. Whether we’re working with prospective new families, meeting people at public events, or socializing with friends and family, we encourage others to view and treat their pets as members of the family. We are their guardians, and they depend on us for companionship and care.
We spay/neuter prior to adoption.
We microchip all our Pet Haven Pets and remain as a secondary contact.
We make sure all pets are up to date on required vaccinations
We test for Heartworm and Lymes in all our dogs and are transparent in the results and treament
We test for FeLV/FIV and are transparent in the results. We believe that cats who test positive still deserve a chance at a quality home.
We do not euthanize animals unless they have untreatable health or behavioral conditions that deny them an acceptable quality of life or makes them a serious threat to people, other animals, or themselves.
How We Operate
We rely on adoption fees, tax-deductible donations, grants, and special events to keep our rescue operating. Our staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers have provided the passion and commitment to keep Pet Haven a safe haven for animals for almost 70 years.
We are committed to preventing pet homelessness through the SNIP Grant. Since 2005, we have granted more than $240,000 to organizations in Minnesota to support spay/neuter initiatives.
