My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Hammy, the hammiest ham there ever was, a 7-year-old, 56lb sweetheart who radiates lgentleness, and pure gratitude. This boy has a heart of gold. Hammy is deaf, but he communicates beautifully in his own way, nudging his head into your lap for comfort, following your movements, and staying close to his people. Inside, he’s incredibly responsive and eager to please. Outside, he’s working on leash manners and adjusting to a noisier world he can’t hear, but he’s making steady progress with patience and positive guidance. He’s medium/low energy, happy to play with his ball or chew on his kong, but equally thrilled to curl up for a long crate nap while you work. He absolutely adores being near his humans and has settled into household life with impressive ease. With other dogs, he’s friendly and just really wants to be included! Never aggressive, just enthusiastic and unaware of his size! Hammy is fully house-trained, crate-trained, and sleeps through the night. He loves every person he meets and has zero reaction to squirrels, noisy streets, or other distractions, one of the perks of being unbothered by sound. He’s gentle, snuggly, and so ready to be someone’s best friend.

Recently, Hammy received a full medical workup that finally gave us answers. He was diagnosed with chronic atopic dermatitis with otitis, which explains his long-term skin and ear discomfort. He’s now on the proper treatment — antibiotics, topical care, antiseptic wipes, and probiotics — and is already feeling so much better. His foster describes his little groans during itch relief as “Hammy being Hammy,” and we’re excited to see them fade as he continues healing. Most of all, Hammy just wants to love and be loved. He thrives in a calm, caring home — where his people are around, and he can be part of the daily routine. He’s easygoing, affectionate, and endlessly loyal. Hammy has survived more hardship than he lets on, but he hasn’t let it dim his spirit for one second. He is ready for his forever famil, and they are going to be so lucky.

Adoption application

Go meet their pets

The first step of the adoption process is to complete an adoption application in full at www.rescuecity.nyc. All of our dogs are in foster homes throughout the city. We do not have a physical location where we keep dogs.

More about this rescue

Rescue City is a no-kill, non-profit1 pet rescue, rehabilitation, and adoption organization. Our team of dedicated volunteers is based in Brooklyn, NY and serves the NYC metro and surrounding areas.

Our organization’s motto is: There’s a person for every dog, and there’s a dog for every person…it’s just a matter of time. This applies whether you are looking to adopt a pet, or would like to make a positive impact on the lives of animals. At Rescue City we believe it is our moral responsibility to defend the lives of abused, abandoned, and neglected animals.
We take on helpless stray and surrendered animals, as well as those at the top of the euthanasia list at local and international shelters. We place our rescues in nurturing foster homes while they rebuild their lives through physical and mental rehabilitation. Following a thorough – but hassle free – adoption process, our Rescues are placed in loving, responsible, and committed permanent homes. Every rescue is fully vetted and altered, micro-chipped, and vaccinated upon adoption. Our commitment to our rescues does not stop once the adoption paperwork is signed. We stress the importance of responsible pet ownership, and we educate our Fosters, Adopters, and community on what it means to be a good pet owner.
