My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Dutch (aka Humphrey)!

I’ve only been fostering this handsome guy since October 21st, and it didn’t take long for me to fall completely in love with his sweet, easygoing personality. And if there’s one word to describe Humphrey, it’s happy. This boy is just happy all the time. Happy to eat, happy to play, happy to snuggle, happy to go for a walk… just happy, happy, happy.

He loves other dogs and so far has not paid attention to feral cats. Now that he’s feeling better (he was severly underweight), he’s become much more active, bouncy, and playful. He loves to wrestle and run with his dog friends of all sizes. In fact, there are sometimes when he prefers to hang out with the littles.

When he first met all the dogs here, he was understandably nervous, as anyone would be! But after a few slow introductions and monitored interactions (to make sure my dogs weren’t being jerks to him), he did beautifully and settled right in. He has zero food or toy aggression, just tons of joy and love to give.

He has never met a stranger, and his favorite place in the world is right next to his people. He is very happy to sit behind you (right behind you) while you make dinner. Whether I’m cooking, doing dishes, or folding laundry, he’s always my cheerful little shadow.

We’re not entirely sure of his breed mix, but he seems to have some American Bully and Boxer in him. He certainly plays like a Boxer, goofy, bouncy, and full of heart. He’ll even give a gentle paw-hug around your leg when you try to walk away, as if to say, “Don’t go yet!” He can get a bit mouthy when he plays, but it’s always soft and good-natured.

Dutch is house-trained and doing wonderfully, though he does need frequent potty breaks. He doesn’t chew anything except his toys, and he LOVES his toys. He’s a collector at heart, gathering them into little piles or stashing them in his crate. Blankets, shoes, clothes… he’ll gather those too and build himself the coziest nest.

He’s also a total foodie! When he was rescued, he weighed just 45 pounds and was skin-and-bones. Now he’s filling out beautifully, currently at 51 pounds, and will likely settle around 60.

Cold, rain, and snow aren’t his favorite (same, Dutch… same), but he’s still happy to pop outside when needed. He’s very happy to go for walks and very happy to hop into the car for an adventure.

After a recent vet visit, his age estimate was adjusted from 7 years to about 4–5. He’s truly the perfect blend of mellow and playful. Great in the car, adorable in a cozy sweater, and a perfect gentleman during our Lowe’s and Home Depot trips.

If you’re looking for a loyal, cheerful, loving companion who’s always ready for a walk, a wrestle, or a cuddle, Dutch might just be your guy!  As we continue to learn more about him, we’ll definitely keep sharing updates!
