Meet Cedric, a delightful Lab mix with a shining personality. Sweet and independent, Cedric is the friend everyone dreams of having. Although she can be shy at first, once she warms up, she becomes incredibly friendly and playful. Her contagious energy makes her the perfect companion for adventures or a fun day at the park. Cedric’s unique blend of traits makes her an ideal candidate for a loving home where she can thrive and share her joyful spirit. Adopt Cedric and discover the true meaning of unconditional love and loyalty.
Dogs in our shelter are usually tested with other dogs their own size, and we always suggest a meet-and-greet with your current dog before adoption. A cat test can be done if you ask, but it only shows whether a dog has strong, obvious reactions to cats. We still recommend being very careful when introducing any dog to a cat at home. Our advice about how a dog may behave with children is based on what we see in the shelter, such as energy level and how the dog reacts to being touched. Young children should never be left alone with any dog, and we cannot promise how a dog will act around kids, cats, or other pets. Keep in mind that behavior in the shelter is only a small snapshot of how a dog might act overall. Dogs come from many different backgrounds and may not have had much training, so adopters should be ready to spend time helping their new dog learn and adjust. Dogs should not be fed together unless you know they do not guard their food. We also suggest learning about the dog's breed or mix before adopting, since different breeds have different needs. Moving from a shelter to a home can be stressful for a dog. Many people use the Rule of 3 to understand the adjustment period: * First 3 days: Dogs may be scared, tired, hide, get excited easily, or not want to eat. * First 3 weeks: Dogs start to settle in and learn a routine. New behaviors may show up as they relax. Keep things calm, avoid busy places, and use a crate or quiet room when you're gone. * First 3 months: Most dogs have bonded with their new family and feel more comfortable in new situations. For more information about this dog or others at our shelter, please visit the Joplin Humane Society website or call us at 417-623-3642. Dogs are usually tested with other dogs their size, and we encourage meet-and-greets with your dog before adoption. Cat tests are available if requested, but they only check for clear aggression. We believe in an open, non-judgmental adoption process. We recognize that no one is perfect and try to match a person's pet expectations so fewer pets are returned. Under normal conditions the process is:
- Come in with your family and look around. If you see a pet that you like, ask staff to meet the pet (if the pet is available to be taken out)
- Complete the adoption questionnaire.
- After the meeting, go over what information we have on file about the pet and his/her past experience.
- Finish the process by having a conversation with our adoption staff.
- After the above is completed, we can put a hold on a pet for 24 hours if you need time to think about the decision or to prepare your home.
- Most of our pets can go home the same day.
Adoption fees are: $90 - $140
This includes the animals spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations including rabies, de-worming and micro-chip.
Rules:
- We will not adopt a pet to anyone under the age of 18
- We will not adopt to anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- We reserve the right not to place a pet in a home based on the information we have or if we feel the pet is not a match for the person's lifestyle.
JHS does reduce or waive adoption fees for a variety of reasons: Too many cats or kittens in the building, older and special needs pets that have a harder time finding homes, etc. Adoption Promotions are a fun way to engage the public and bring in potential adopters. Shelters remain the #4 way people obtain their pets.
