My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Chompers, a Timneh African Grey in his 30s who is currently taking applications for his next bestie! He is a reserved and sensitive bird who takes his time getting to know people, but once he warms up, he is friendly, happy, and loves to be part of the action.

Chompers enjoys spending time on the tops of his cage, on his stand, or pretty much wherever you place him. In his previous home, he had a history of biting and so he was handled with caution - he is working on this and is still learning how to step up consistently. His foster has been helping him gain confidence through gentle handling, sometimes using a towel for transitions, though he can often be coaxed onto a hand with patience. Luckily, Chompers is a smart cookie and has extremely clear body language! If he is not interested in interacting, he will simply take your hand in his beak and move it away. Paying close attention and being sensitive to Chompers' body language will be key in earning his friendship.

Chompers isn't much of a talker, but he makes plenty of sounds, including beeps, whistles, and the occasional shrill noise when excited. He is not particularly loud, though those with noise sensitivities should note that his favorite sounds resemble microwave or smoke alarm beeps.

Chompers eats pellets and is experimenting with ones that are lower in fat and healthier for his older age. He is not a picky eater and enjoys most fresh food, especially steamed veggies. His favorite thing to do is chow down on a bowl full of snacks while watching TV. Occasionally, he will show his appreciation by bopping his head up and down.

Toys are a newer concept for Chompers, but he enjoys paper and cardboard toys he can pick apart, especially anything he can preen. His favorite perch is a flat platform near the top of his cage, which also doubles as his preferred sleeping spot.

Chompers is selective about handling. He may lunge if someone he doesn’t know tries to touch him, but his cues are very clear and he is not an aggressive bird. He enjoys being talked to, takes treats gently from strangers, and wants to feel included rather than isolated. He would do best in a home where he can be part of the family’s daily activities.

Because of his background and the level of understanding he requires, prior parrot experience is strongly preferred. Chompers uses bluffing to test new people (the reason for his name) but underneath that is a sweet, gentle, and funny bird who wants to connect. He loves dancing, enjoys attention, and has a hilarious habit of gently preening his foster’s fingers and cuticles.
