My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Mrs. Kitts 🐱💗
Mrs. Kitts is a gentle, soft-spoken sweetheart with a heart full of quiet love. Shy and reserved at first, she takes her time getting comfortable, but once she feels safe, her friendly and tender nature comes forward in the sweetest way. She’s also the devoted mother of Knuckles, Gertrude, Felicity, Paddington, and Millicent, and she’s been nothing short of a wonderful mom. Patient, nurturing, and steady, Mrs. Kitts has cared beautifully for her little family and is now ready for a calm, loving home of her own. With patience and kindness, she’ll blossom into a loyal, affectionate companion who’ll stay quietly by your side. If you’re looking for a gentle soul who just needs a safe space and a loving heart, Mrs. Kitts is waiting to begin her happily-ever-after. 💕🐾

More about this shelter

Originally founded in 1891, our shelter has served as a safe haven for thousands of stray, unwanted, abused, abandoned, and sick animals throughout South Jersey. Today, as Associated Humane Societies South, we continue that mission as part of New Jersey’s largest animal sheltering system.

Associated Humane Societies (AHS) rescues stray and homeless animals—both domestic pets and wildlife—providing compassionate care and sanctuary until they can find loving homes. As a community-based organization, we also offer low-cost veterinary services and humane education programs to promote responsible pet guardianship across the state.

For over a century, AHS has stood as a refuge for abused and neglected animals. Founded in 1906, the organization operates shelters in Newark, Forked River, and Tinton Falls—and now, South Jersey’s location in Vineland. The Forked River facility is also home to Popcorn Park, a sanctuary established in 1977 for abandoned, injured, exploited, or elderly wildlife, exotics, farm animals, and birds.

AHS is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, proud to be devoted to the thousands of animals who enter our doors each year in search of a better life.
