My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Socialization: He is shy at first but warms up quickly when meeting new people. He is great with all other dogs and playful; he is on the submissive side. Ember loves running in the backyard and pointing at birds and squirrels! He stares at the cat but does not bother her and recently, he and my cat were sleeping near each other last night with no issues, so he would be okay with a dog savvy cat.

Training: He is very good in the house. I crate him when I’m gone and for the last several hours of overnight because the cat sleeps upstairs on the bed and several of my dogs sleep upstairs with me. Ember is good in his crate also.

Activity requirements: Ember loves to run outside and go for walks! He is a puller but I am working on that. He loves the yard and with outside time and 1 long walk of about 30-45 mins is good for his activity level.

Fence requirements: I would say fenced yard ideal since he loves the yard and with his focus an electronic fence might not deter him. 5’ or higher fence would be best, chain link or privacy. Without a fenced yard, only applicants with a solid and daily exercise plan will be considered.

Personality: He is a very happy dog that probably hasn’t had lots of human attention but he loves to be cuddled and hugged. When he’s tired, his favorite place is curled up on the couch. He’s social with me and my dogs and has been meeting lots of people and dogs on our walks and has done well!

Health history: When he came into rescue, he had an ear infection that was treated and his ears are ears fine now. He also took 30 days of antibiotics for a tick disease that is also all resolved now. He came with hypoallergenic food due to a supposed sensitive stomach in Greece but he’s made the switch to Diamond Naturals salmon/potato food without issue and is gaining weight nicely and feels great. I just have him on a probiotic chew twice/day and some fish oil once/day and he has been doing well on this, so he will not need special food. He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm medication. His next leishmaniasis test will be due in September 2026.

This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.

Foster comments: Ember is a beautiful and sweet Pointer. If you are looking for a dog that has a great temperament and personality and loves to be active but is also calm in the house, Ember would be a fantastic dog for you!
