My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Pastrami on Rye – The Outdoorsy Breadstick
Age: 5 years
Weight: 50 lbs
Location: Fostered in Passaic County, NJ
Available in: NY, NJ, CT, PA, ME, VT, VA, DE, MD, DC, RI, NH
Status: Fully vetted, neutered, microchipped

Meet Pastrami on Rye
If Carnegie Deli ever opened a wilderness branch, Pastrami would be the mascot. He’s built like someone stretched a sandwich too far and said “eh, close enough.” Long body, short legs, big hair, bigger attitude — a dog who looks like he was assembled during the lunch rush.

He’s a lowrider with high ambitions, especially when snow is involved. The moment flakes hit the ground, Pastrami transforms from “loaf on legs” to “winter sports prodigy.” Snow zoomies. Snow dives. Snow sprints. He’s basically a breadstick with a gym membership.

On the trails, he’s a compact adventure unit — sturdy, determined, and shockingly fast for a dog whose legs are roughly the length of a Postit note. And when the hike is over? He collapses into you like a warm roll straight out of the oven. Certified snuggler. Professional cuddler. A man of the people.

Personality & Compatibility
Dogselective — he clicks with certain dogs.
Snowobsessed athlete — winter is his peak performance season
Great hiking partner — low center of gravity, high enthusiasm
Elite snuggler — melts into you like butter on rye
One blue eye — his signature Pastrami flourish

Why He’s Impossible Not to Love
Pastrami is a walking conversation starter — part deli icon, part outdoor explorer, part chaosshaped carbohydrate. He’s funny without trying, affectionate without being clingy, and absolutely unforgettable. A GREAT dog with a oneofakind build and a personality that belongs on a billboard.

Additional adoption info

Our mission is to find the best possible homes for the animals in our care. Many of them have been through severe hardship, mistreatment or neglect, and that makes it even more important that we do our best for them. This means that we have to have guidelines because not every adopter is right for every animal. We try to do right by every person who comes our way looking for a new family pet. But sometimes we have to say “no” to a potential adopter. Our animals do not have a say in where they go; since we speak for those who have no voice, we must do it well. Our rejection of an adoption application is no reflection on the adopter. Everyone who wants to adopt an animal from a shelter or rescue group is special because they open their homes to those in need. But, while we try to meet the needs of everyone, our clients are the animals. They have no one else. We appreciate your understanding.

More about this rescue

The mission of Hounds in Pounds (HIP), is to end the daily killing of thousands of adoptable dogs in the United States. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New Jersey and Georgia and we rely 100% on donations.

HIP has a multi-faceted approach to achieving our mission, combining rescue, adoption, spay/neuter outreach and public education. Dogs rescued by Hounds in Pounds are transported to private veterinarians for proper medical treatment, where they are vetted, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and tested for heartworm before being placed into new, loving homes. We work as a team, communicating from sunrise to sundown to manage the many moving pieces that make our work successful.

Each dog we pull to safety is a member of our family and is treated with the utmost love and respect. We are a lifeline for thousands of dogs that otherwise wouldn’t stand a chance. Many of the dogs we rescue are cases that no one else will take, as our motto at HIP is to “never say never”. To be clear, we are working for them. These dogs are our heroes, and we look to them for hope, inspiration and sometimes the strength to keep going. We also consider our followers, donors, adopters, rescue partners and the rescue community a direct extension of our team. Without each of these moving parts, Hounds in Pounds wouldn’t be able to do what we do.

As one can imagine, the costs associated with running an operation of this magnitude are extraordinary. We fulfill our mission by collaborating with local shelters, veterinarians, boarding facilities, transporters, and local businesses, and through the generosity of donors and supporters. It is thanks to our dedicated volunteers and the benevolent donations of our HIP family of supporters that any of this is possible.
