This helps Malinois and Dutch Shepherd Rescue, Inc. with pet care costs.
Say hello to #MADloveMaverick — or “Mav,” as his friends call him!
Maverick enjoys long walks in the woods and using his teeth to explore the world. He is part kangaroo, part alligator… so in other words, a very typical Malinois.
He is medium–high drive and enjoys biting (appropriately!) and prefers toys as a reward over food. His food drive is also good and can easily be increased with training.
Maverick is learning some basic manners, such as keeping his teeth off hands and arms and sitting politely at doorways. Both are still very much a work in progress. He is very puppy and needs supervision when out of the crate, but he settles well once he’s had enough exercise or has something appropriate to chew on and play with.
With training and time, Maverick will be a wonderful dog. Without training… imagine a tornado with teeth.
He crates well for the most part but has a harder time settling when his human is home. This has improved significantly with consistency and routine. A camera setup shows that when no one is around, he is calm and relaxed in his crate. He does still have occasional accidents both in and out of the crate, but this continues to improve as he settles into a routine.
Maverick has done well around older children (approximately 8–12 years old). Since those puppy teeth like to taste everything, supervised interactions are recommended until he develops better manners and matures.
He gets along with cats but wants to play and chase, so dog-savvy cats would be best until he learns more appropriate behavior. He loves everyone he meets and has shown no signs of being defensive or possessive.
Maverick would do best with a breed-savvy handler or someone with training experience who has done their research and is excited to work with this breed. He would likely excel at just about any sport—you name it. He enjoys pulling, using his nose, and is currently learning basic engagement, house manners, and obedience.
All MAD dogs come with a Fi Collar and six-months subscription.
