Meet the Pet
This helps New Leash on Life Dog Rescue with pet care costs.
Meet Benji
Benji is a 4-year-old Shih Tzu mix weighing about 14 pounds who is looking for a calm, patient, and dog-savvy home where he can truly feel safe.
Benji appears to have had a rough start in life and is still learning that the world — and people — can be kind. He tends to feel more comfortable around men and can be sensitive to feet or sudden movements near him. Because of this, Benji will need an experienced owner who understands canine body language and is committed to continuing his training and confidence-building work.
Benji is currently recovering from a significant skin infection, and as he heals, we are still learning how much of his reactivity may have been related to discomfort or pain versus past experiences. What we do know is that with clear structure, gentle leadership, and consistency, Benji does best when he is not allowed to “run the show” and when expectations are calm and predictable.
Benji is not a beginner dog, but for the right person, he has the potential to be a loyal, rewarding companion. He will thrive in a home that values patience, boundaries, and positive reinforcement, and where his progress can continue at his pace.
If you’re an experienced dog owner who believes in second chances and understands that trust is earned, Benji may be the little guy you’ve been waiting for.
