My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

To learn more about Meg, please get in touch with dogs@lostdogrescue.org.

Meg will be at one of our adoption events this weekend! Visit our event page (https://www.lostdogrescue.org/events/) to see which one—event listings are usually updated on Fridays with attending dogs.

Meet Meg, a black-and-tan coonhound mix with timeless hound charm, soulful eyes, and a heart of gold. Her personality truly depends on her environment, revealing two very different—and equally lovable—sides.

Out in unfamiliar places, Meg is calm, docile, and a bit nervous. She takes things in quietly, approaching new situations with caution and soft curiosity. She greets people with gentle tail wags and kind eyes, even if she’s unsure at first, and gains confidence the more time she spends with her person. On leash, she’s generally easygoing and comfortable passing other dogs.

But once Meg feels safe at home, the transformation begins. In her comfort zone, this mild-mannered hound turns into a high-energy, rambunctious puppy: rough, rowdy, and a little bit wild in the most endearing way. She plays hard; loves to romp and wrestle; and brings big, joyful energy to her indoor playtime before eventually crashing for long, well-earned naps.

True to her hound roots, Meg adores running, sniffing, and exploring. She loves other dogs and would do best with a confident, highly energetic canine companion who enjoys rough-and-tumble play and can match her stamina. Meg is sweet-natured, people-friendly, and not aggressive—just bursting with enthusiasm.

Meg is still learning that containment equals safety. She needs continued support getting comfortable with barriers like baby gates and crates. She has made some progress with nighttime crate training, and her forever home should be prepared to keep building her confidence with patience, consistency, and reassurance.

Meg would thrive in a quiet suburban or rural home with a secure fenced yard and low-traffic walking areas. With the right environment and understanding of her “two sides,” she will blossom into a loving, loyal, and endlessly entertaining companion.

If you’re a hound lover with space, time, and an active lifestyle—and you appreciate a dog who’s equal parts gentle soul and playful whirlwind—Meg is ready to sniff out her forever home with you.

Additional adoption info

After you Adopt, you have two weeks to make sure this is a good match for your household. Our goal is for both the adopter and the pet to be happy with the adoption. If you return your adopted pet during those two weeks, we will refund the adoption fee or help you find a better match.

We cannot guarantee the health of any animals adopted. You will receive medical records when you adopt showing the care your adopted pet has received and what we have done to address any medical issues known to us. Please be aware that the animals available for adoption have been in contact with other animals and could have been exposed to a disease. Like human illnesses, these disorders can have an incubation period of up to several weeks. If the animal you adopt shows signs of illness at any point, please take it to the vet for treatment. Once an animal is adopted, the adopter is responsible for all medical expenses. LDCRF will not pay for medical care for an adopted animal.

Adoption application

Go meet their pets

Our adoption process begins with a conversation in an open, welcoming environment. We want to hear about your hopes for your new pet, your day to day routine, and your concerns. We will tell you about our available pets and help you make a choice that we hope will be just right.

This takes place in person at one of our weekly adoption events (Use this link to see our event schedule: https://www.lostdogrescue.org/events/) and if you find the right fit, you will take your new family member home that same day.

More about this rescue

Our Mission:
Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation helps homeless pets find their way to loving homes through rescue and adoption.

Our Vision:
A world free of homeless, neglected or abused pets.

Our History:
- The Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation (LDCRF) was incorporated as a 501c3 not-for-profit organization in 2001 when restaurant owners, Pam McAlwee and Ross Underwood,of Arlington, VA decided to formalize their efforts to save homeless pets in their community. They purchased 63 acres of land in Sumerduck VA and began building The Lost Dog Ranch, a kennel facility for homeless pets with plenty of outdoor space for dogs to run and a cage-free building for cats. In 2018 LDCRF embarked on a new chapter of its mission and purchased a facility in the heart of Falls Church, Virginia. The facility today is now know as the Lost Dog & Cat ‘Rescue Care Center’.
- Since 2001, LDCRF has saved the lives of more than 45,000 homeless pets, most of whom were facing the threat of euthanasia at over-crowded municipal shelters.
- Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation is overwhelmingly a volunteer-run organization with a small paid staff providing direct care to animals at the Lost Dog & Cat ‘Rescue Care Center’. Many other animals are cared for in our network of volunteer foster homes and some cats are housed at PetSmart Cat Adoption Centers.
- Every weekend, LDCRF holds off-site adoption events at local PetSmart and PetCo stores and places more than 2,000 dogs and cats per year for adoption. In addition to weekly adoption events, LDCRF is very active within the local community and partners with local businesses and community members to hold ‘Special Adoption’ events through the year.

Our Values:
- LDCRF was founded with the belief that through an open, friendly adoption process we could match great people with homeless pets and send those pets to their new homes without unnecessary barriers. To that end, we have done same day adoptions with two-week trial periods since 2001, and continue to look for ways to remove barriers that prevent adoptions.
- LDCRF makes a lifetime commitment to the animals we rescue and accepts those animals back into our care should the need arise.
- At Lost Dog we like pets AND people and we hope to make the adoption process positive and fun for adopters and volunteers alike.
