My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Pickles is mellow for a floppy puppy. He is curious and intelligent, knowing sit and other commands. He looks at you in the eyes and is ready to follow you anywhere, especially if cheese is involved. He has been unlucky in that he's been back in quarantine for a cold for a while, then the pneumovirus outbreak happened. If this sweet boy saw more people, he'd be snatched up.

RE In Foster: If you're looking for SNUGGLES, ADVENTURE, and a dog with CHARACTER, Pickles is the perfect fur baby for you! He's very intelligent for a puppy, already knowing the basic commands (sit + shake - we're working on lay down) and fairly good at walking on a leash in public (he responds to heel!). He's a large puppy with the mindset of a small lap dog, he LOVES a good cuddle sesh and sleeping in, and he always surprises us with the variety of funny ways he likes to snooze! He goes crazy for his stuffed animals, BALLS, and tug of war toys. Besides being playful, he's extremely food motivated and unfortunately a very messy drinker - we're trying to teach him to wipe his mouth but it's not going well. Pickles grows to be pretty protective of the people he loves, but he's open minded to meeting new people slowly. We're still working a bit on his teething, but I'm sure with training and love from his forever family it's a habit he'll grow out of quickly! Pickles is a SWEETHEART and is so excited to be with his forever family and show off his goofy, clumsy, and loving personality! (Jan 29, 2026)

Additional adoption info

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 kittens up to 6 months
$120 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

More about this shelter

Austin Animal Center is the largest open-intake animal shelter in central Texas and we work very hard to try to save 90% or more of the thousands of animals we shelter every year. We always need volunteers and both monetary and in-kind donations to help us in our sheltering and prevention activities. Visit our website to find out how you can help!
