These cats are not well-suited as indoor only pets and can help families looking for natural rodent and pest control on their property. Because they are independent, they do best as indoor/outdoor cats. These cats typically enjoy free access to the outdoors, where they can come and go at will. Territorial by nature, they’ll rarely venture far from their home. They understand the safety of shelter and predictability of a food source in the shed, barn or garage where they are housed and fed. Barn cats do best in groups.
Like all cats, outdoor cats require:
– Shelter from predators and the elements
– Clean, fresh water
– Healthy, regular diet
– Veterinary care when needed
As an adopter, you should understand that these cats are unlikely to become social, affectionate lap cats. They will most likely remain shy and skittish around people but may warm up to those who take care of them, particularly those who feed them.
Our outdoor cats are:
– Spayed/Neutered
– Up to date on vaccines
– Have tested negative for FeLV/FIV

1. Visit our shelter and choose the animal that you would like to adopt.
Please be aware that the adoption process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the information we need to cover with you and the number of pets going home at the same time. We know this is a time commitment, but your new pet will appreciate it!
2. Fill out an adoption profile. At PMHS, we use a profile and interview process to ensure that each animal adopted will be matched with the most compatible new owner(s). Once your profile has been reviewed, our adoption counselors will discuss with you any medical or behavioral information relevant to the animal you chose and process your adoption application. Every dog or cat that is adopted from PMHS is up to date with required vaccinations and microchipped.
3. Pay fee.
3. Congratulations! You are now ready to go home with your new pet!

More about this shelter
After 35 years, our organization is now officially known as Pope Memorial Humane Society. Though we have a new name, logo, and facility, it is important to keep in mind that we are the same organization at our core. Our staff, volunteers, and operations remain the same, as does our unfailing commitment to saving the lives of animals in need. We will continue to serve Strafford County and the surrounding areas of New Hampshire and southern Maine with the same dedication. Though we are proud of the growth and impact we have made in the last 35 years as Cocheco Valley Humane Society, we look forward to this new chapter in our organization’s story.
