My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sammy will be 5 yrs old in March 2026. He is healthy and lovable. He is very friendly to nearly all dogs and people. Sometimes he barks and tries to lunge at passers-by, quickly moving children, and cyclists when behind a fence or on a leash.

When Sammy was 18 months old, his owner left him at a shelter in southern Virginia. I adopted him a few weeks later and found out he has separation anxiety. If I leave him in the house, for more than about 5 minutes, he barks, yowls, and cries piteously and continually. I can leave him at a kennel where he is quiet and anxious. If I leave him with a family member, he hides and will not eat or drink for hours. I have tried prozac, gabapentin, and trazadone to no effect. I did desensitization training with a dog behavior specialist but Sammy didn't learn to settle.
The ideal owner would be someone who has already helped an anxious dog and wants the challenge of helping Sammy. It would help if there were other dogs at home.
