My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico***

Hi, I’m Sequoia — a soulful adventurer with a sensitive heart.

Life didn’t start out easy for me… I was rescued from the streets of Zihuatanejo, Mexico as a tiny puppy with my sisters, Cedar and Juniper. We were found alone in a cardboard box next to a busy road, scared and crying. But we were rescued just in time — and I’ve been learning to trust the world ever since.

I used to be a super mellow, quiet girl — just happy to curl up with my human and enjoy peaceful evenings playing in the yard. But now? I’ve discovered that I love to explore! My favorite kind of walk is through trees, rivers, and quiet trails — places where it’s just us and nature. I don’t feel comfortable in busy areas with lots of people or dogs. If I see someone up ahead, I’ll let you know so you can call me back. I’m happy to be leashed then — being close to you helps me feel secure. But if I’m not on leash and something feels too scary or tense, I might want to run. Once leashed, though, I’ll follow you anywhere. ‍

I’m a cuddle expert at heart. I love staying close to my person — ideally touching you while we relax. I can totally hang out in my crate or on a dog bed too, but I’d really prefer to be near you, especially at night. I love resting my head on your lap, curling up as your little spoon, or tucking myself into the curve of your bent knees. I bond deeply with the people I trust, and once I do, I’ll show my love in the sweetest ways — gentle face licks, nose nudges, and adorable play invites.

I’m crate trained, house trained, muzzle trained, and I know basic commands like sit, down, up, and wait. I’m not super food motivated — I’ll politely reject most hard treats and won’t eat if I’m stressed. But I do enjoy soft treats and your warm praise. I walk beautifully on leash (unless I need to potty or pick up the scent of another dog ), and while my recall isn’t perfect, I stick close and always come back after a good sniff. My foster mom’s dogs help me come quicker — if they run back, I run too!

New environments and people take me a bit of time. I actually like new people who just sit and don’t approach me right away — that’s my favorite way to meet! I’ll come over for a long, curious sniff, and if you’re gentle, I might even crawl into your lap. It’s sudden movement that can make me nervous (I mean, where are you going?), so I need a little extra time to feel safe when people are active around me. I’m very kind — I just need space and patience. A quiet, low-traffic home with a steady routine would help me thrive. When I move to a new home, I’ll probably need another decompression period — slow intros and no pressure to be social at first. But once I feel secure, I’ll bloom.

It took me some time to learn how to “speak dog,” but I’ve gotten so much better at it! I’m quicker now at accepting new dog friends, and if you’re patient, I’d love to have a calm, friendly canine buddy. I became best buds with my foster siblings — we play, cuddle, chase lizards, and just have the best time. I do especially well with confident, respectful dogs who give me space when I need it. That helps me feel safe and connected.

I’ve also been learning how to spend time alone. I’m much more comfortable when I have another dog around — we’ll just nap quietly and wait for your return. When I’m totally alone, I might call out for you as you leave, especially if I hear the gate, but I calm down fairly quickly and have never destroyed anything. Once I’m relaxed, I’ll snooze the day away and welcome you back with a wag and a smile.

I may always be a sensitive soul — but I’m also playful, loyal, goofy, and overflowing with love. If you go slow with me, I’ll show you my whole heart.

Your Sequoia

From Her Foster

Sequoia is one of those dogs who finds her way deep into your heart.

When she first arrived, she was quiet, cautious, and unsure of everything. It took time — and a lot of patience — but soon, she started to show glimpses of the incredible spirit she was hiding.

Now she plays like a puppy again. She zooms through the yard with toys, splashes through rivers, and explores the woods with a sense of freedom and curiosity that’s beautiful to watch. She’s also made lovely, respectful friendships with my dogs — and seeing her develop into such a thoughtful, playful companion has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

She’s not a dog for a busy or social household — she’s a perfect match for someone who finds magic in the quiet moments: the morning cuddle, the peaceful forest walk, the shared silence at the end of the day.

I love her to pieces. If I didn’t already have two reactive dogs of my own, I’d honestly be thinking about keeping her. She’s blossomed into something rare and wonderful — and I’m hopeful we’ll find her that one-in-a-million human she’s been waiting for.

More about this rescue

Surfers for Strays was started in January of 2017 by Isabel Velasco and Natalie Ritenour when they rescued 7 puppies and their mother, who had been abandoned at a local hot springs in Lagunillas, Guerrero, Mexico. The puppies were being eaten alive by parasites and their mother was severely malnourished.

Working together the women devised a plan to house and care for the animals and raise funds and more importantly, raise awareness to sterilize pets. They gained enough support in the local community to start helping “callajeros”, street animals in the villages of Troncones, Los Llanos, La Saladita and surrounding regions.

With the help of local veterinarians and citizens, they organized spay and neuter clinics and a program to educate children on how to treat and care for animals. Surfers and other travelers began volunteering and growing the network to foster and adopt animals in the US and Canada. With that momentum and the love and support of key volunteers, Surfers for Strays Inc. was founded in August of 2019 to cover more ground and help more animals escape the cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment. From 2020-2021, Surfers for Strays adopted out more than 250 dogs and cats to fur-ever homes in North America and paid for more than 3,150 dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered in local communities in Mexico.

Your donations support our programs to sterilize, rehabilitate, find fosters and adopters for animals in need. Your donations also support education programs for the humane treatment of animals in underserved communities. Together we are saving animals and sharing the Mucho Aloha spirit.
