My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico

Hi, I'm Nairobi!

I'm part of the Money Heist Litter — yep, we’ve got some serious star power in our names! My seven siblings and I were found in a very dangerous area near a busy street. Life was tough, but a kind shop owner had been feeding our brave mama, Lisbon, helping her stay strong until help arrived. Even though Surfers for Strays were already full, they didn’t turn us away. They visited us every day, made sure Mama had enough food, and watched over us until they could create a safe space at the shelter. Thanks to their determination (and a bit of creativity with quarantine space!), we were finally brought to safety. Now, we’re all growing up surrounded by love, care, and plenty of tail wags.

I’ve been told I’m the perfect mix of sweet, playful, and cuddly. When I first come out of my crate in the morning, I stretch, give my sisters some good-morning licks, play a little, and then... nature calls! I’m definitely an affection-seeker — once I know you. I can be shy with new people at first and might bark or keep my distance, but give me some time and a calm approach, and I’ll start warming up. Once I trust you, I love gentle head and neck scratches and will happily come over for snuggles. I’m also known for licking people’s legs to get their attention — my signature move!

I enjoy playing both with my sisters and having some solo exploring time. I’m a little adventurer in the garden (especially if there are interesting plants to nibble on ). If things get exciting, I might bark or wag my tail like crazy, but I’m not one for drama. I don’t have a favorite toy — I’m more into people than possessions. My energy level is a solid 3 out of 5: playful, but not wild.

I’ve been working hard on my basic commands — I know how to sit and lie down like a pro! I'm also getting the hang of leash walking. If there are a lot of dogs around, I might get a bit overexcited and pull, but in calmer moments, I walk nicely by your side. I’m doing really well with crate training, too! Although, I have to admit… when it’s bedtime, I sometimes lie down and pretend I didn’t hear you. But I go in with a little patience. I’m motivated by treats and praise, and I love learning new things — especially when there’s a snack involved!

I’m calm during thunderstorms — I’ll just find a cozy spot under the table and wait it out. No issues with other loud noises like traffic or barking dogs. My biggest challenge is meeting new people: I need time and space before I feel safe. But once I do, I’m incredibly affectionate and loyal.

I’m looking for a patient, loving family who understands that some pups (like me!) need a little extra time to build trust. I’d thrive in a calm environment where I can slowly get to know new people, with someone who enjoys cuddle sessions just as much as I do. If you're ready to help a gentle soul blossom and give me the forever home I’ve been waiting for… I promise I’ll be your best friend.

Love,
Nairobi

More about this rescue

Surfers for Strays was started in January of 2017 by Isabel Velasco and Natalie Ritenour when they rescued 7 puppies and their mother, who had been abandoned at a local hot springs in Lagunillas, Guerrero, Mexico. The puppies were being eaten alive by parasites and their mother was severely malnourished.

Working together the women devised a plan to house and care for the animals and raise funds and more importantly, raise awareness to sterilize pets. They gained enough support in the local community to start helping “callajeros”, street animals in the villages of Troncones, Los Llanos, La Saladita and surrounding regions.

With the help of local veterinarians and citizens, they organized spay and neuter clinics and a program to educate children on how to treat and care for animals. Surfers and other travelers began volunteering and growing the network to foster and adopt animals in the US and Canada. With that momentum and the love and support of key volunteers, Surfers for Strays Inc. was founded in August of 2019 to cover more ground and help more animals escape the cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment. From 2020-2021, Surfers for Strays adopted out more than 250 dogs and cats to fur-ever homes in North America and paid for more than 3,150 dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered in local communities in Mexico.

Your donations support our programs to sterilize, rehabilitate, find fosters and adopters for animals in need. Your donations also support education programs for the humane treatment of animals in underserved communities. Together we are saving animals and sharing the Mucho Aloha spirit.
