Meet Kika! Kika is a loving and devoted girl who adores affection and attention from her people. She has a contagious zest for life and bonds very deeply with her trusted humans. Kika makes the silliest faces to make you laugh and loves playing with her toys, going on walks, and car rides. She makes cute little puppy noises when she wants her human's attention and loves playing footsies. Kika is a very smart dog who has endless potential and loves to learn and please. She knows many commands and will perform for just a “good girl.” She is fully potty trained and will “go pee” outside on command.

Kika came to us after she wandered into the home of a shelter volunteer badly injured and clearly the subject of mistreatment. She was in terrible shape but somehow knew to find a safe place to ask for help. Kika is now thriving in foster with steady guidance and leadership and has graciously shown us her true joyful personality. Understandably, Kika does not immediately trust strangers so applicants should expect an adjustment period that includes some guarding behaviours including food guarding. During this period of building trust, it will be important to feed separately and give space. Men especially are scary for Kika and, while she can pass them outdoors fine, she cannot relax when they are in her indoor space. She will guard herself with barks and growls if she feels threatened, but is fine crated in another room if male visitors are present. Kika learned to trust her female foster very quickly (just days) so we are looking for a specific adopter to ensure similar success. We’d be happy to discuss further with any interested applicants who have dog experience but maybe don’t match all the listed details.

Kika is very in tune to her people and, when with a trusted handler, is curious and brave out in the world. Kika loves smiling and wagging her tail, so she attracts lots of attention when out on walks. She does not mind that attention when her handler advocates for ‘no touching’ with strangers and has made several friends. Kika currently lives in Toronto and loves her walks, but prefers quieter times or side streets. Kika is like a big puppy herself, so she loves meeting other dogs while out on walks, especially little or playful dogs. Kika is living in a condo currently and is great; she very rarely barks and is crate trained for 6+ hours. Kika sleeps in her crate while left alone and is also fine to amuse herself with a toy when her foster is in another room. Kika sleeps through the night in her crate without issue.

Kika's perfect home would be with female human(s) who do not plan to share a home with a man. Ideally, Kika's adopters will have dog experience (resource guarding experience would be amazing), or be very open to learning. Once Kika learns to trust her new human, she is a very easy, wonderful companion. Kika is listed as pet-free because her resource guarding makes her unable to live with other dogs without a very experienced human willing to manage safe, healthy relationships. Kika adores meeting and playing with other dogs out on walks and never forgets a friend. Kika could live in a house, townhouse, or apartment outside a busy downtown core. If an apartment or condo, her adopter will need standard diligence about elevators and hallways so strangers don’t touch Kika uninvited.

Kika is a wonderful, special lady, who has made so much progress in overcoming her past trauma. She has a huge amount of love to give and would make an amazing companion for the right mom(s). Kika's foster has generously offered to support approved adopters on how to set Kika up for success.

Kika has mild/moderate enamel hypoplasia which is thinning of the enamel on her teeth. Homecare will help with brushing but she may require professional dental cleaning in the future. Kika should avoid hard chews, toys, and treats as her teeth will be more prone to breaking during play.

Additional adoption info

To adopt one of our dogs, please fill out an application at https://www.fetchandreleash.ca/adoption-info#adoption-form. Although we do our best to reply to all inquiries within 72 hours, please remember we are a volunteer-run organization. We appreciate your patience.

If we think your application has potential to be a good fit, a Fetch + Releash volunteer will contact you to set up a time to speak over the phone and conduct the home visit. In addition to the phone interview and home visit, we also require personal, veterinarian, and landlord reference if applicable.

After the phone interview, home visit & reference check, you will then be granted a private meet and greet with the dog.

After the meet and greet, the adoption committee will then review your completed application and make a final decision.

More about this rescue

Established in 2016, Fetch + Releash is a volunteer run dog rescue dedicated to saving dogs in need. Our foster dogs come from a variety of different backgrounds such as shelters, strays and surrendered pets, both locally and abroad. Through our network of volunteers, foster homes, trainers and veterinarians, we strive to give every dog the loving forever family they deserve. As a foster-based rescue, our dogs live in private homes across the Greater Toronto Area where they receive the love and attention they need to ready them for adoption.

A dog is a lifetime commitment and not to be discarded due to health, lifestyle change or inconvenience. Some of the top reasons dogs end up in shelters are lack of training, lifestyle changes (i.e. new baby, marriage), relocation, cost of dog ownership, not enough time for pet etc. Our goal is to ensure our adoptive families are well versed in the realities of dog ownership and ready to make a lifetime commitment.
