My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

MEET RUGBY!
75 lbs of love, laughter & lovable chaos

Fostered in New Jersey
Vetted • Neutered • Chipped
Age: 2 years old
Status: Emotionally available and ready to bulldoze your heart

About Me: Hi, I’m Rugby! I’m basically a golden-hearted linebacker with the soul of a teddy bear and the coordination of a baby giraffe on roller skates. I enjoy long walks (where I zigzag like I’m solving a mystery), spontaneous zoomies, and making dramatic entrances into rooms I was already in.

Looking For: A human (or humans) who love belly rubs, tolerate drool, and don’t mind being gently steamrolled during cuddle sessions. Must appreciate big personalities, bigger heads, and the occasional missing burger that was left on the edge of the counter. OOPS!

Rugby’s Talents Include:
Zoomies that defy physics
Couch domination
Burger relocation (OOPS!)
Tail-wag percussion
Emotional support loafing
Squirrel surveillance (he’s very committed)

Looking For: A family that loves belly rubs, spontaneous comedy, and big-hearted goofballs who occasionally knock over furniture in the name of love.

Turn-Ons:
Squeaky toys
Snacks
Humans who laugh when he sits like a loaf of bread

Turn-Offs:
Vacuum cleaners
Baths (unless bribed)
Squirrels with attitude

Fun Facts:
I once tried to befriend a garden gnome. It didn’t go well.
I believe every couch is a throne.
I wag my tail so hard, I’ve knocked over a lamp, a toddler, and a bowl of spaghetti. All in one day.

If you’re ready for love, laughter, and a little bit of lovable chaos, swipe right on me athoundsinpounds.org. I promise to be your best friend, your cuddle buddy, and your personal happiness technician—with only a slight chance I’ll “accidentally” relocate your lunch.

Rugby is fostered in Bergen County, New Jersey.  He's good with dogs, cats and kids!
We adopt to: Georgia, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Maine, Vermont, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire.

Additional adoption info

Our mission is to find the best possible homes for the animals in our care. Many of them have been through severe hardship, mistreatment or neglect, and that makes it even more important that we do our best for them. This means that we have to have guidelines because not every adopter is right for every animal. We try to do right by every person who comes our way looking for a new family pet. But sometimes we have to say “no” to a potential adopter. Our animals do not have a say in where they go; since we speak for those who have no voice, we must do it well. Our rejection of an adoption application is no reflection on the adopter. Everyone who wants to adopt an animal from a shelter or rescue group is special because they open their homes to those in need. But, while we try to meet the needs of everyone, our clients are the animals. They have no one else. We appreciate your understanding.

More about this rescue

The mission of Hounds in Pounds (HIP), is to end the daily killing of thousands of adoptable dogs in the United States. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New Jersey and Georgia and we rely 100% on donations.

HIP has a multi-faceted approach to achieving our mission, combining rescue, adoption, spay/neuter outreach and public education. Dogs rescued by Hounds in Pounds are transported to private veterinarians for proper medical treatment, where they are vetted, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and tested for heartworm before being placed into new, loving homes. We work as a team, communicating from sunrise to sundown to manage the many moving pieces that make our work successful.

Each dog we pull to safety is a member of our family and is treated with the utmost love and respect. We are a lifeline for thousands of dogs that otherwise wouldn’t stand a chance. Many of the dogs we rescue are cases that no one else will take, as our motto at HIP is to “never say never”. To be clear, we are working for them. These dogs are our heroes, and we look to them for hope, inspiration and sometimes the strength to keep going. We also consider our followers, donors, adopters, rescue partners and the rescue community a direct extension of our team. Without each of these moving parts, Hounds in Pounds wouldn’t be able to do what we do.

As one can imagine, the costs associated with running an operation of this magnitude are extraordinary. We fulfill our mission by collaborating with local shelters, veterinarians, boarding facilities, transporters, and local businesses, and through the generosity of donors and supporters. It is thanks to our dedicated volunteers and the benevolent donations of our HIP family of supporters that any of this is possible.
