My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Fitz is a 12 yr old shih tzu and a funny little old man who lives for snoozes, slow mornings, and happy neighborhood walks. He may be a senior with some special needs, but he is a gentle, easygoing companion who just wants to be by your side and enjoy life at your pace. Personality and routine Fitz is mellow, affectionate, and loves to follow his people from room to room or curl up nearby in his small bed or on the couch. He is a champion napper who happily sleeps in his crate overnight and often snoozes in after his early-morning potty break, then trots out for a long walk once he decides it is time to start the day. He is house trained with a routine, needs a last trip outside before bed, and will usually let you know when he needs to go out. Walks, manners, and quirks Despite his age, Fitz LOVES his walks, moves with a surprising pep in his step, and thinks sniffing every good smell is the best part of the day. He walks nicely on leash, is polite with other dogs, and is friendly and calm with new people, preferring gentle petting and quiet companionship over toys. Fitz is generally a quiet dog who rarely barks, but because he is deaf he can yell a bit when he is trying to tell you something important, which only adds to his charm. Health and special needs Fitz is a senior dog who is quite hard of hearing and has very limited vision, but he has adapted beautifully and navigates his world using his nose and routines. He receives eye drops twice a day and has liver value elevations on bloodwork; he has started a daily liver supplement, is currently doing well, and will need repeat bloodwork in 34 months to monitor this. Fitz will do best with an adopter who can commit to his ongoing vet care and is comfortable guiding a deaf, visually impaired senior with patience, consistency, and lots of love. Ideal home Fitz would thrive in a calm home that appreciates a low-key buddy rather than a playmate, with people who are around enough to keep him on his routine and enjoy couch time and easy strolls. He has been easy to live with in foster care, is good in the car when safely restrained, and is simply looking for someone who wants all the love of a dog without the stress of raising a puppy. If you are ready to open your heart to a gentle senior who will happily nap, wander, and chat his way through his golden years beside you, Fitz might be your perfect match. Additional adoption info

Before inquiring about a specific dog for adoption, please ensure you have read their complete bio. We try to provide a complete description of each dog’s preferences in their write up including whether they are good with children and/or other pets. Adoption fees for each dog are also listed in their bio. If you still have questions about a dog you’re interested in please send us a message and one of our volunteers will respond as soon as possible.

The first step if you are interested in adopting one of our available dogs is to complete the following Adoption Application. Once your application is received one of our volunteers will review it and then get in touch with you to schedule a time for an interview. When possible, we request a Skype or Facetime interview with you, so that we can complete your “phone interview” and “home visit” all at once. If these applications are not available to you we will schedule your phone interview first and, following that, we will schedule a home visit where a volunteer visits to meet all family members and see where the dog would be living.

Our focus is on making the best match, not only for our rescue dogs, but also for our adoptive families. We want our adoptions to be successful for all involved so please understand that our adoption process is in place to ensure this happens.

More about this rescue

Precious Paws Rescue was founded in December 2006 and is based in Simcoe County, Ontario. We do not operate a shelter facility; all of the dogs that we accept into rescue are fostered with volunteers in this area. Precious Paws was officially incorporated as a non-profit in Ontario in 2010 and registered as a charitable organization in 2019. We are, and always have been, 100% volunteer-run.

We receive daily requests for rescue help from animal shelters and also from owners who are no longer able to care for their dogs. Precious Paws accepts all breeds, all sizes and all ages, we are limited only by the foster spaces we have available and by monetary funds. Foster homes, volunteers and donations are always greatly appreciated so be sure to click over to our “How You Can Help” pages to see how you can get involved.

Precious Paws Rescue ensures that each and every dog we rescue has full veterinary care provided prior to adoption. This includes (but is not limited to) full age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal test and deworming, wellness bloodwork and heartworm test, spay/neuter and microchip. We believe that no dog should be adopted out unaltered (unless there is a medical reason prohibiting this) so we practice pediatric spaying and neutering for all puppies that enter our rescue as well. Often the dogs we rescue require additional veterinary treatments to prepare them for adoption and most dogs that we take in end up costing the rescue much more than the adoption fee recovers. We lose an average of $600 on each and every dog that we rescue. For this reason we host fundraisers and donation drives throughout the year so that we are able to continue being available for the dogs who need us most.

In 2015 we started “Loved At Home” (formerly “Boo’s Fund”) – a fund that endeavors to keep more families together when medical emergencies arise with beloved pets. Sometimes good pet owners fall on hard times and are unable to afford an injury or acute illness with a pet. Most often those owners are forced to euthanize their companion or surrender them to a shelter or rescue to ensure they receive the care they need. Precious Paws would prefer to keep well cared for dogs out of the shelter/rescue “system” and we created Loved At Home to do just that. When funds are available, we will provide pet owners with the money needed to assist with emergency veterinary care, so that dogs don’t lose the family they love and so that there are fewer dogs in need of shelter/rescue assistance. Loved At Home also supports families by providing food donations and temporary foster homes when the situation calls for it.

Precious Paws Rescue has grown a great deal from the one foster/volunteer that we started out with. Because of dedicated volunteers, generous supporters and committed adopters, we have been fortunate enough to directly change the lives of many, many dogs since we started. Our hope is to continue to provide relief to the dogs that need us most for many years to come.

Our Mission Statement
