Here's what the humans have to say about me:
🐾 Meet Asher 🐾
6–7 years old • Shih Tzu mix (maybe a little Schnauzer sass in there too) • 15 lbs • Ready for his forever home
Asher’s story hasn’t been an easy one. We don’t know everything he’s endured, but we do know he’s a survivor. He was found all alone after his owner passed away—severely matted, nails painfully overgrown, a mass hanging from his side, and broken ribs with herniation on the other. Despite all of that, he has met every step of his recovery with resilience and fight.
He’s now had multiple surgeries, is fully healed up, and his mass biopsy came back benign with clean margins 🙌 His ribs are healing beautifully and he officially has a clean bill of health. You’d never guess what he’s been through by looking at him today.
But let’s talk about his personality—because this little dude has a lot of it.
Asher is a compact king of sass. He may be small, but he’s confident, opinionated, and has a lot to say. He trash-talks constantly—mostly harmless grumbles, but every once in a while he means it when he says he’s done with your nonsense.
He enjoys being petted, hanging out on the couch, and being close to his person… for a reasonable amount of time. Once he’s decided he’s had enough affection, he’ll let you know (in true Asher fashion). He’ll gladly let you pick him up—but he will complain the entire time like you’ve just ruined his day.
Despite his backtalk, Asher is a smart boy. He knows “come,” “sit,” and “bed/crate”—and will also complain while following those instructions because, well… he’s Asher.
Now for the non-negotiables:
Asher is food-aggressive, including with treats. It’s best to avoid food interactions altogether in his forever home. Whether his quirks are something someone wants to work on is up to his adopter—but we can tell you they are part of who he is, and he’s not dumb… he just has opinions that run deep.
So the big question:
Is there someone out there who wants a middle-aged, small-breed, trash-talking, food-guarding, grumbly-but-lovable little dude?
Because if so—Asher has SO much good to offer:
🐾 Perfectly housebroken
🐾 Great with dogs
🐾 Great with cats
🐾 Able to meet respectful kids, but due to resource guarding, we recommend an adult-only or older-teen home
Asher may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for the right person? He’s an absolute gem with personality for days. If you appreciate a dog with quirks, communication skills, and a spicy little soul, Asher might just be your perfect match.

Hi, my name is Cecilia Nieves. I am a certified veterinary technician @ Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Services as well as a full time mother. For about a decade now, I have been well involved in the veterinary field and for more than half of those years been actively involved in rescue work as well. I have worked with all kinds of pets and wildlife to even working as a Zookeeper @ Busch Gardens-Tampa.
Our name, AnimalLuvr’s Dream Rescue, comes with a bit of history as well. My mother and I moved to Florida when I was 12yrs old. My wonderful friend, Jenna, helped me create my very first email address. Always knowing I wanted to be in the veterinary field, I searched for animal lover and it had already been taken. Trying to be creative, I spelled it AnimalLuvr and from then on this became my logo and nickname. Being that this is my dream of having a rescue it is pretty self-explanatory.
In 2009 I began working hands on with both domestic and wildlife rescues that arrived to our emergency service in very critical conditions and this quickly made me realize that not only are there a lot of animals out there that need our help but a lot of them are strays that no one claims, confiscated animals and those that the owner either cannot or will not give them the care they need. The Tampa bay and surrounding areas are very lucky to have a hospital like Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Services that opens its doors to those unclaimed animals and care for them when no one else will. I am more than honored to say that Dr. Katy Meyer is not only supportive of my mission and goals but will be assisting us as being one of our wonderful board members!
June 2014 – After a year and a half of lots of invested $, tons of paperwork, calling the IRS at least monthly to follow up and patiently waiting – WE HAVE OFFICIALLY RECEIVED OUR APPROVAL LETTER FOR OUR 501c3 TAX EXEMPTION!!
