Hi everyone, I am the nervous but loveable JD and here's some information about me:
Age: 1 yr 6 months
Breed: Labrador/ Doberman mix
Gender: Male
Weight: 35-40 lbs
Height: 18 inches
I am a very sweet, cuddly, smart, gentle, curious and affectionate boy. I would thrive in a calm and active home with dog savvy people who are willing to work consistenly on my training and enrichment. Because of my upbringing and the death of my elderly owners, I am a bit anxious and I somtimes bark when meeting new people. I however do settle in easily with patience and treats from my handler. I'm pretty unbothered seeing people at a distance and I don't bark at people with dogs while in the car. Car rides make me a bit anxious but I will calm down after a few minutes. I do somtimes fall asleep on long car rides.
I don't like being left alone, in the car or at home. My foster and I were working on this and I am starting to show improvement after a week of daily practice. I know how to ‘sit’ and ‘leave it’ very well, and I'm learning some other simple commands like ‘enough’, ‘no’, ‘off’, ‘this way’ (with a gentle pull on leash). My leash skills are fine with room for improvement. I always love putting on my harness because then I know I get to go outside!
I am curious about other animals, but I don't have a high prey drive. I don't chase or bark at cats, rabbits, squirrels, birds, deer, or other dogs. In the kennel I'm staying in now, I've been making friends with the other dogs and playing with them sometimes. I am not food aggressive, and my favourite snack is broccoli! I think I would likely do very well with other dogs in the home. I'd love humans who work from home or are home often because I love my people. I had a pretty tough start to my life, but I'm looking forward to finding my special dog lover out there who can help me learn how to relax more easily and truly thrive.
I haven’t been around children yet. Older, calmer kids or teenagers who can be patient with me while I learn will be better for me. Everyone around me thinks that I will be an amazing companion to very special humans who recognize my potential. Once I trust you, you’ll be my friend forever.
My owners weren't really equipped to take great care of me because of their age and activity levels, and they left me alone alot when they got sick, so I can be a bit fearful sometimes, but I very quickly take a shine to new people who treat me with trust and a gentle spirit. My dad did take me to puppy school where I learned some basics when I was a baby, but I still don't like to go in my crate much, so we'd need to work on that together. I love putting on my harness to go for walks and I'm generally a good boy on leash. I've been learning to get along well with other dogs and it's been fun for me to play with them!
I wasn't initially housetrained, so I was not great at waiting to go outside, however my foster and kennel experience has helped me learn how that works and I have gotten much better at not making a mess!
An adoption fee of $100 applies.
