My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Considering adopting? The first step is to complete our online Adoption Application at http://forgetmenotshelter.org/application

Please do not call the shelter; do the application first.

Sarah is a stunning, one-of-a-kind mixed-breed girl a little over 2 years old. She comes from a large group of dogs abandoned in a remote mountain area, where they survived with almost no human contact. Fortunately, several of them—including Sarah—were brought into our adoption program so they can finally experience the safety, comfort, and love they’ve always deserved.

Because she grew up without proper socialization, everything is still new for Sarah. She studies the world carefully, always trying to understand her surroundings. You’ll often see her touching her nose to people, objects, leashes, and the ground—her way of gathering information and making sense of this big, unfamiliar world.

When Sarah first arrived, she avoided people completely and sought comfort only from her dog friends. Now, she’s beginning to understand that “stranger” doesn’t always mean “danger,” and we’ve watched her warm up to new people more quickly with each passing week. Her progress has been slow, steady, and incredibly heartwarming.

Sarah would thrive in a home with another confident dog (or two). She relies on canine companions for reassurance and would feel less pressure to stay hyper-alert if she has a friend to help share the “watching.” Despite her gentle nature, her awareness of everything happening around her means she might become a good little alert dog when visitors arrive.

She gets along wonderfully with other dogs and did beautifully during her nose-to-nose meeting with a cat through our screened catio, so with proper introductions, she may be able to live with a calm, friendly feline.

Weighing around 55 pounds, Sarah is truly unique-looking; her mix is anyone’s guess. Shepherd? Whippet? Saluki? Retriever? Your guess is as good as ours, but whatever her lineage, she is a breathtakingly beautiful, one-of-a-kind work of canine art.

Sarah is housetrained, observant, and quietly intelligent, with a soft, soulful presence that draws you in. She just needs a patient, gentle home willing to give her the time and space to unfold at her own pace.

If you’re looking for a sensitive, loyal companion and have room in your home (and heart) for a shy girl discovering the world for the first time, Sarah may be the perfect addition to your family.

All pets arrive spayed/neutered, dewormed, microchipped and vaccinated. Adoption fee for Sarah is a suggested minimum of $150 (more gratefully accepted). All pets are placed with a 30-day money-back trial period, to give pet and family enough time to discover any unknown allergies or other conflicts.

Can't come to Republic? Don't let that stop you! We have monthly transports to the Seattle area, delivering adopted pets to their new owners. If you can add a little to your donation to help us cover our volunteer driver's expenses, that would be great!

Additional adoption info

Our minimum adoption donations are indicated on each pet's listing.

The first step toward adoption is to fill out the application, which we can email to you or you can find on our website:

http://forgetmenotshelter.org/Application

Filling out the application in no way commits you to adopting - it simply enables us to get you preapproved, in case you decide you want to adopt. If you are then approved and offered a pet placement, you may always refuse the placement. If you accept a placement, we always give you three days (for puppies and kittens) or thirty days (for adult dogs and cats) to live with each other; if during that time you decide that your new pet simply won't work out, for any reason, we will accept the pet back with a full refund of your adoption donation. You could either return the pet directly to us, or have it picked up on our next transport! I must say, we are very proud of our successful placement record - we really work hard to make sure you and your pet will be a great match.

If you are out of our immediate area, we ask that you email some photos of your home, yard (including fence if you have one), any "animal-specific" areas (such as a dog run, cat tree, or sleeping area) and any other pets you currently own. Sometimes photos enable us to skip the pre-adoption home visit, which can speed things up considerably for out of area adoptions! For the vet reference, either a vet who is seeing your current pets, or a vet who saw a former pet, is acceptable. If this is your first pet ever, congratulations on joining the pet world! :-D We will consider your application without a vet reference, but we would like to know what vet you think you will use for your pet. Without a vet reference, please be sure to provide at least two strong personal references who would know how you are with animals.

If we have an upcoming transport scheduled to your area, we will make every effort to process and approve your application in time for the transport.
