My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

HOVIS hails from the Northern Ontario community of Kingfisher Lake and came south with her sister, Ciabatta, to find her forever home. She was part of a litter of 4 puppies but only 2 came to this rescue. She’s received her first 2 vaccines, a microchip, dewormer and has been deemed a healthy girl by her vet. We have no knowledge of her parents so the breeds we have listed as are just an educated guess based on what she looks like. We’re also assuming she’s going to be an XL dog based on the breeds she looks like she is. She’s a very active big bundle of energetic joy who loves to run around and play. She also loves to chew on her many teething toys including her Nyla bone. She’s out going and loves to snuggle up with you and be a shadow who follows you around everywhere. She is adventurous and loves to investigate new things she finds in her environment.

HOVIS is crate trained and sleeps quietly in it at night and will nap in it during the day too. House training is going great and she hasn’t had any accidents in her foster home since being there and she’ll cry to go outside for a bathroom break.Walking sometimes can be a bit of a challenge with her as she zig zags in front of you and basically acts goofy and wants to hang around your legs. After a while she will start to walk better and get to enjoy her walk. She’s definitely not your typical Northern dog when it comes to food as she eats very daintily and likes to graze on her food. She does love her treats though and will eat them right up and take them “gentle” from you. She has very good manners at meal time too as she’ll sit nicely for her meals and wait to hear “good girl” before she moves to eat.

HOVIS’ ideal family would be an active one that loves the outdoors and to go on hikes and walks in the woods. She does well in a vehicle so will always be up for a drive and especially if it leads to an adventure for her. She’ll do well in a home with other dogs as she’s fostered with two of them and she loves to socialize with them too. She had met several kittens and she wants to swot at them with those big paws of hers so if there’s a cat in the home they should be dog savvy and quick enough to run away from her. She doesn’t seem to be aware of the size she is and comes across as but of a klutz and will knock into things and do things like stand in her food bowl and tip over her water bowl. She should do well as an only pet in the home provided she’s not left alone for long periods of time every day. Children should be aged 10yrs and up plus be loving, kind and gentle towards animals. A fenced-in yard is a must for her so she can be kept safe while she has a run around and play and with the energy she has, she’ll need that for sure.

Puppies are cute, playful and fun but also require a lot of time, patience and dedication to training. We do need her adopter to be in agreement to take her for puppy/obedience training to help her to become the best girl possible. Her spay is included in her adoption fee and her potential adopter must be in agreement to have her spayed by the time she’s 6 months of age. The surgery will be at the Barrie SPCA but you can use your own vet and we’ll reimburse you what we would’ve paid for it there. In order for the rescue to do so we need the spay requirements to still be followed plus a copy of the procedure invoice and a picture of her (preferably in her onsie or cone) in order to do the reimbursement. We do post the picture on our fb page along with other pets that were “fixed” in the same week.
If the big liveable HOVIS sounds like she’ll suit your family and lifestyle then please submit an adoption application to meet her.

Additional adoption info

Dogs: $750 (as of March 2024)
Cats: $250
The adoption process involves a brief application for the pet you are interested in. We will review your application and if you appear to be a good match for the pet, we will contact you for a phone interview. If that is successful we then do a vet reference check. If all goes well we will then set up a meet and greet for you and anyone else living in the home including any resident dogs with the pet. We then ask you to go home and contemplate your decision on adopting the pet and let us know your decision within 24hrs of meeting the pet. If applicable we will then move forward with the adoption at a mutually agreed upon time.

Go meet their pets

We only set up meet and greets with our animals once an adoption application has been submitted. We do occasionally have meet and greets with our animals at Global Pet Foods in the Barrie area.

You can check out the available pets on our rescuegroups website or on our rescue Facebook page.

More about this rescue

We’re a small rescue with a big mission to save animals in our Northern communities, local Pounds and owner surrenders (under certain circumstances.) We’re located in Barrie, Ontario and we serve the area of Simcoe County and within a two hour radius of the Barrie area.
Our intakes are placed in loving foster homes until they’re assessed, vetted including vaccines, microchip and a spay/neuter (if over 6 months of age) before they leave the rescue to be adopted. Female puppies are spayed at 6 months of age and males 8 months of age.)
We’re always looking for additional foster homes as we can only do intakes if we have foster homes for them to go into.
