My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Grond IS AVAILABLE (updated 12-05-2025). To meet any of our dogs, complete our online adoption application on our website: http://www.coastalgsr.org/dogs/grond Grond is a 6 year old German Shepherd. He was adopted from Coastal GSR when he was a two month old puppy named Ian. His current owner is asking Coastal to help rehome Grond due to changes in his life. Grond is a BIG BOY. He is about 90 lbs. He was over 100 lbs but he lost some weight and it wouldn't hurt for him to lose a few more pounds. When you initially meet Grond, he can be guarded, but he warms up quickly once he knows you’ll give him lots of back rubs, massages and head pets. Per his soon to be ex owner, he is up to date with all of his shots and has no health issues. His teeth look good and he is a healthy boy overall. Grond does not realize how large he is and likes to lean in on you, and rub up against your leg for more pets and massages. He should not be around small children since he could knock them over, unintentionally. He is currently lives with two small dogs and does fine with them. Per the current owner, he is not aggressive and is fine with other dogs and people. He just needs proper introductions. He is prey driven and will chase squirrels, possums, birds, and probably cats but he’s too slow to catch them. He prefers to be indoors but will stay outdoors. Grond is calm and mellow. He likes to go on walks but will not chase a ball. He is not reactive when he sees other dogs and ignores them for the most part. More walks are just the prescription he needs to lose those extra pounds. Grond does not jump or climb on things. He is not crate trained but is potty trained. He sleeps on his doggie bed and might test trying to get on the couch. He listens to commands such as sit, come, and paw/shake hands. He is large, so folks need to be mindful of his size. He does not realize he is big and could knock things over, unintentionally. Overall, Grond is a big sweet lover in the prime of his life looking for a new home and some attention. The minimum adoption donation is $375 for adults and $500 for puppies. This helps cover vet care, boarding fees, and other expenses. All dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped.December 5, 2025, 5:51 am

Make a donation to the Saving Gideon Fund!

In Gideon's honor, we would like to start a Saving Gideon Fund. This fund will be for seriously injured dogs who need immediate medical care. Often times the decision to save a life depends upon how much money is in our bank account. It's very sad, but unfortunately the truth! We would like to create this fund so that the next time we are asked to save a severely injured dog we can say YES!

Please help us to create this fund in Gideon's honor!
This fund will allow us to save more injured German Shepherds like him.

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

All prospective adoptive families must complete an on line application followed by a telephone interview and then receive a home visit before a German Shepherd is placed in their forever home.

Our adoption donation is $300 for Adults and $400 - $500 for Puppies. This amount only partially covers the cost of veterinary care, boarding fees, and other miscellaneous expenses involved in the temporary care and adoption of our dogs and is 100% tax deductible.

Prior to placement, all dogs will be spayed or neutered, receive current vaccinations, and are usually microchipped. If not, arrangements will be made on an individual basis. Special consideration may be given to those willing to adopt older dogs or dogs with physical problems.

Donations are tax deductible and also help other dogs in need!

More about this rescue

Coastal German Shepherd Rescue of Southern California is a non-profit 501(c)3 public charity dedicated to finding loving homes for abandoned German Shepherds. Your tax deductible donations go to support these very deserving animals. Coastal was formed to serve communities in the counties of San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles and the Inland Empire.

Coastal is dedicated to providing new beginnings for homeless German Shepherds who have been abandoned, neglected, abused, relinquished by their owners or just left at local shelters to await an uncertain future.

We are committed to finding loving permanent homes for the Orphaned dogs in our care. Coastal is an all volunteer, no-kill, non profit organization.

Our mission is to educate the public about German Shepherds, their lifespan, personality, activity level, along with overall responsible dog ownership. We also raise awareness of over population of animals through education, training, spaying and neutering. We work very hard to match each dog with the adoptive families.
