My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi! My name is Dietrich. That means "ruler of the people" in German. My foster parents gave me that name since I spent my life being so powerless, now it is my time to learn what it's like to have power. I had a very rough first half of life, and am ready to be loved. I was once emaciated but no more, thanks to the shelter and my foster people. My spirits have been lifted, I'm realizing the world isn't so scary, I just needed a different view of it. I am still a bit nervous, but I love affections, having a good chew and I'm learning not to be afraid of my dog, cat and bunny siblings because they are family and that's new for me to learn. I didn't get to be part of a family before..

Just as I was on my way to my very best, I'm having a tricky nasal problem that may be caused by a fungus or a mass - I hope you'll follow my story on the pages of ClassicCaninesATX or at caring@classiccanines.org - the advocacy group is covering my care for testing, diagnosis and seeking my treatment needs. I'm really grateful for the new life I have that opened my eyes and heart to love, compassion and belonging like family. Please support my efforts so I can have as much life ahead as possible. I found a whole new world I didn't know about before.

Additional adoption info

Our shelter has more than 500 available cats and dogs every day!
For pets at the shelter: Adoptions must be completed in-person at the shelter. AAC is open for adoption walk-ins every day from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. A shelter pet’s availability can change at any time, so we recommend choosing a few favorites.
For pets in foster: Go to www.AustinAnimalCenter.org to find the pet's profile and click that pet's pink “Adopt Me” button. This will prompt you to complete an adoption questionnaire. Submitting an application does not hold the animal for you.
We have dozens of animals that won't be listed online yet because they're still in their stray hold period, but can be pre-adopted at the shelter in case their owner doesn't come for them.

Adoption Fees:
$80 cats up to 6 years old
$80 dogs 6 months to 6 years, 30 lbs and up
$100 kittens up to 6 months
$120 dogs under 30 lbs and/or under 6 months
No fee for senior pets 7 years and older

More about this shelter

Austin Animal Center is the largest open-intake animal shelter in central Texas and we work very hard to try to save 90% or more of the thousands of animals we shelter every year. We always need volunteers and both monetary and in-kind donations to help us in our sheltering and prevention activities. Visit our website to find out how you can help!
