***** AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION NOW ***** Intact male ~1 yr old ~75 pounds Vaccines given 08-20-25 No microchip ALT ID# 08-16-25 1 Dog is not social, very scared, freezes and does not walk on leash (can be leashed), runs away in kennel unless you move very slowly, needs serious socialization and behavioral training, has not shown any aggression thus far Staff have worked multiple times with Spud due to his lack of socialization with people and his fear-based avoidance. During his intake evaluation Spud did not want to walk on a leash at all, he allowed staff to touch him, but he was extremely tense. After Spud had time to decompress staff took him out for a walk where he was stubborn and would only walk in a direction he felt there was something he could hide under or behind. When staff took Spud out for a second walk, he showed improvement as he didn't freeze or pull in different directions as often. He also showed interest in other dogs as he passed them. After his walk was done staff kenneled him with a very confident, playful, and non-reactive dog. This has benefited Spud as he looks to a more confident dog for direction. Spud now will approach staff, he will eat with staff in the kennel which he originally would not do, and he plays with his kennelmate. *****Animals are eligible for adoption by the public after their stray hold period. Rescues are permitted to pull NOW; animal is also legally available for euthanasia on this same date. AVAS will continue to follow the protocols in place for the health/safety of the animals in our care. The canine population currently in our care that are not showing symptoms will be posted on our website for public viewing. Canines will continue to be monitored by our medical staff under the direction of our supervising Veterinarian. Interested adopter(s) should email an adoption application to animalservices@applevalley.org or call 760-240-7555. Any current rescue partners or rescues interested in partnering with our facility are encouraged to contact us at AVASrescues@applevalley.org or call us at (760) 240-7000 ext. 7519 to coordinate rescue pull and transportation. ***** 9/10/25 Pet is still too fearful to handle at this time and does not walk on a leash. Pet may benefit from a foster home or being pulled by a rescue as he is not doing well in the shelter setting. 10/10/25 - Spud is very tense/nervous in the shelter setting. Leashed easily with slow approach. Hesitant to leave kennel but relaxed a bit when away from the noise of the kennel area. Very hesitant/cautious of people. Tolerated being touched head to tail. No negative reaction to people or other dogs. He did well learning to walk on leash but still needs further work and improvement. Will need a confident handler to help build his confidence and further his socialization training. 10/5/25 - Staff got Spud out for a walk again today and did better on the leash. He also was very interested in the other dogs he passed as he wanted to smell them all. After showing interest in other dog’s staff took Spud out on a walk with another male Belgian and they did well together. Staff has attempted to kennel them together. Will have further update on how he is with his kennelmate after an acclimation period.
