Brooke is 8 years old and about 40 pounds. Her DNA shows Lab, coonhound and chow. She’s spayed, vaccinated and healthy. She’s housebroken, leash trained and has had formal training.
She goes to doggy day care and does well. She can live with other dogs but she gets nervous around them, so she’d likely prefer being an only dog. She loves kids and has always been gentle, though she can be a little unsure with adults at first. If she sneaks food she doesn’t like people taking it from her and will give a small growl, but she has never bitten.
Brooke is a steady dog who just wants a calm place to land. Even though she’s good with kids we think an all adult home may help her adjust best. She’ll be a solid companion for someone who wants a friendly dog who already knows the basics.
ADOPTION PROCESS:
1. You must begin our adoption process by applying to adopt on clawsadopt.org. Please do NOT inquire via Petfinder, social media messengers or in our comments. We will only be looking at applications!
2. Please make sure you fill out our adoption application COMPLETELY. We may not be able to respond to applications that are not completely filled out with the proper information. Side note: on our applications, the more details you provide = the better.
3. We prefer applicants live within 60 miles of Closter, NJ. (Applicants who live farther away may still apply. However, please note we do prioritize local applications as we try our best to serve our local community first.)
4. Please respect our organization, our volunteers and our process. As a reminder, our organization is a nonprofit. We receive no money from the state. We have no paid employees! This is a polite reminder that we are doing our best to make the right decisions for the animals in our care. Thank you.

For Dogs:
Adopters fill out our application on clawsadopt.org. We call every applicant for an interview. If we believe they will be a good fit we call their references and perform a virtual home check. At that point we set up a meet-and-greet with the potential adopter and the pet. We have the adopters sleep on the decision and call us the next morning to let us know how they are feeling. If they would like to proceed all dogs go on a two week trial (with paperwork) prior to the official adoption. After the end of the two weeks if all is going well we send them over the official adoption contract and collect payment.
For Cats:
We receive applications and screen them. We invite people to come to our cat adoption events to meet the available cats/kittens. At these we interview potential adopters and match them with the correct cat/kitten for them!

The Closter Animal Welfare Society (CLAWS) was founded (as Lost Pet Services) on December 4, 1969. With our network of dedicated volunteers, we rescue, foster, and find forever homes for abandoned and unwanted pets in the northern NJ area. We encourage the public to spay and neuter their pets to reduce the number of unwanted animals in our area.
CLAWS is not a shelter. CLAWS has no paid employees, receives no funds from the state, and exists solely on donations and money we make from fundraisers and adoption donations. Because of this, 100% of every dollar raised goes directly toward the care of our animals. CLAWS is licensed in the State of New Jersey as a non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.
