My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

*** Currently located in Santa Cruz, CA ***

Hi, I'm Tokyo!

I'm part of the Money Heist Litter that was found in a dangerous area near a busy street with my seven siblings! Thankfully, a kind shop owner nearby had been feeding my brave Mama, Lisbon, keeping her going until help could arrive. When Surfers for Strays learned about us, they were already overwhelmed with a full shelter, so they visited us daily on the street, feeding our mom so she had enough nutrients for us and keeping a close eye — but once they met us and saw how much danger we were in, they couldn't turn us away. They made room for us and brought us safely into the shelter in a newly arranged quarantine area, determined to find us the loving homes they know we deserve!

From the moment we arrived, we’ve shown everyone just how special we are. Every day, most of my siblings rush to the fence with wagging tails, eager to greet the volunteers with kisses and cuddles — and while I do love my people deeply, I sometimes am a little more reserved in those moments. I do come up to the fence for sure, when my favorite people come home! But with strangers, I prefer to hang back quietly and avoid the buzz of excitement. It’s not that I’m scared — I just don’t need to be the center of attention. If you walk over and say hi, I’ll gladly accept your love and pets — I’m just thoughtful like that.

Mornings are always exciting! I stretch, do my business, and often bark a little with excitement to start the day. I stay pretty energetic throughout, and I love to provoke my sisters to play. After a good play session, I’m usually back looking for cuddles or a comfy place to relax. And if I know you well… yep, I’ll try to climb into your lap without hesitation I'm also incredibly loyal. Once I know you and you’re part of “my people,” you’ve got a friend for life. I light up when I see the familiar volunteers — tail wagging, happy barks, and lots of leg licks are my love language

I know how to sit and I’m picking up leash skills too. I’m generally good on walks, though I can get a little distracted if something exciting is going on. I respond to treats and praise sometimes — it depends on how focused I am in the moment! When it’s time to head back to my crate or go for a walk, I’m super easy — no drama at all.

I’ve had some tough moments in my little life already. One of the dogs I live with has pinned me down and even bit my face . Because of that, I’ve learned to be cautious around her — I show very polite, appeasing body language and prefer to avoid tension when I sense it. I’m still super friendly with other dogs, but that experience has shaped me to be a little more sensitive in certain situations.

I’m not phased by loud sounds like thunder or traffic — I’m a brave girl when it comes to noises. What gets to me a bit more is chaotic or high-energy social settings with unfamiliar people or dogs. But give me some space and time, and I’ll start to open up in my own way.

I don’t need to be the loudest or the silliest pup in the room. I’m the steady one. The quiet cuddler. The loyal sidekick who’ll always be there, waiting for you with love in my eyes and a wag in my tail If you’re looking for a sweet, devoted companion who will bond deeply with you and be your gentle shadow, then I might just be the pup for you. I’ve got a big heart, a soft soul, and so much love to give.

Face licks,
Tokyo

More about this rescue

Surfers for Strays was started in January of 2017 by Isabel Velasco and Natalie Ritenour when they rescued 7 puppies and their mother, who had been abandoned at a local hot springs in Lagunillas, Guerrero, Mexico. The puppies were being eaten alive by parasites and their mother was severely malnourished.

Working together the women devised a plan to house and care for the animals and raise funds and more importantly, raise awareness to sterilize pets. They gained enough support in the local community to start helping “callajeros”, street animals in the villages of Troncones, Los Llanos, La Saladita and surrounding regions.

With the help of local veterinarians and citizens, they organized spay and neuter clinics and a program to educate children on how to treat and care for animals. Surfers and other travelers began volunteering and growing the network to foster and adopt animals in the US and Canada. With that momentum and the love and support of key volunteers, Surfers for Strays Inc. was founded in August of 2019 to cover more ground and help more animals escape the cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment. From 2020-2021, Surfers for Strays adopted out more than 250 dogs and cats to fur-ever homes in North America and paid for more than 3,150 dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered in local communities in Mexico.

Your donations support our programs to sterilize, rehabilitate, find fosters and adopters for animals in need. Your donations also support education programs for the humane treatment of animals in underserved communities. Together we are saving animals and sharing the Mucho Aloha spirit.
