My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

***Currently located in Guerrero, Mexico

Hi, I'm Sierra!

I'm part of the Money Heist Litter that was found in a dangerous area near a busy street with my seven siblings! Thankfully, a kind shop owner nearby had been feeding my brave Mama, Lisbon, keeping her going until help could arrive. When Surfers for Strays learned about us, they were already overwhelmed with a full shelter, so they visited us daily on the street, feeding our mom so she had enough nutrients for us and keeping a close eye — but once they met us and saw how much danger we were in, they couldn't turn us away. They made room for us and brought us safely into the shelter in a newly arranged quarantine area, determined to find us the loving homes they know we deserve!

From the moment I arrived, I’ve shown everyone just how special I am. Every day, I rush to the fence with a wagging tail, eager to greet my favorite volunteers with kisses and cuddles. I’m sweet, outgoing, and playful — exactly what you’d expect from a lively pup — but I also have a relaxed and gentle side. Did I mention I love playing with the other dogs? ‍ I’m always ready to make new doggy friends!

I'm also so smart! I'm learning important skills like leash walking, sitting politely, and patiently waiting for food. I'm told I'm incredibly well-mannered, not to mention I'm also doing really well with my crate training, setting me up for great success in my future home.

When I come out of my crate in the morning, I stretch, go potty, then hop up on the bench at the entrance to wait for breakfast — priorities, right? I usually stay full of energy and ready to play. I absolutely love cuddles and playing with toys, especially my beloved tennis ball! I’ll often come looking for you with it in my mouth, hoping you’ll throw it for me.

I’m a very affectionate girl and pretty open with new people — I’ll even let you pet my head and belly right away. And once I feel comfy with you, watch out — I’ll probably try to jump into your lap for some snuggles! When the volunteers return after being away, I’m right there to greet them with tail wags and cuddles. Around other dogs, I enjoy both solo time and playing with my sisters. If things get exciting, I’ll just wag my tail and join in the fun.

I’ve learned how to sit and I’m picking up other skills, too. I walk quite nicely on a leash, although if I’m with a group, I definitely like to be the leader and might pull a bit to get to the front. I respond really well to both treats and praise, which makes training fun for everyone! When it’s time to go to sleep, I sometimes lie down and pretend I didn’t hear you calling me back to my crate.

I’m a fun, happy pup with lots of love to give and a tail that never stops wagging. If you're looking for a sweet, playful best friend who’s always up for cuddles or a game of fetch, I might just be your girl. I can’t wait to meet you and start our adventure together!

Love,
Sierra

More about this rescue

Surfers for Strays was started in January of 2017 by Isabel Velasco and Natalie Ritenour when they rescued 7 puppies and their mother, who had been abandoned at a local hot springs in Lagunillas, Guerrero, Mexico. The puppies were being eaten alive by parasites and their mother was severely malnourished.

Working together the women devised a plan to house and care for the animals and raise funds and more importantly, raise awareness to sterilize pets. They gained enough support in the local community to start helping “callajeros”, street animals in the villages of Troncones, Los Llanos, La Saladita and surrounding regions.

With the help of local veterinarians and citizens, they organized spay and neuter clinics and a program to educate children on how to treat and care for animals. Surfers and other travelers began volunteering and growing the network to foster and adopt animals in the US and Canada. With that momentum and the love and support of key volunteers, Surfers for Strays Inc. was founded in August of 2019 to cover more ground and help more animals escape the cycle of neglect, abuse and abandonment. From 2020-2021, Surfers for Strays adopted out more than 250 dogs and cats to fur-ever homes in North America and paid for more than 3,150 dogs and cats to be spayed and neutered in local communities in Mexico.

Your donations support our programs to sterilize, rehabilitate, find fosters and adopters for animals in need. Your donations also support education programs for the humane treatment of animals in underserved communities. Together we are saving animals and sharing the Mucho Aloha spirit.
