Imagine someone coming to the shelter with two dogs they want to meet. They meet you first, and they love you! but they decide they like the color of the other dog better. Then someone else comes with a list of two dogs and they met you first and they said SHE IS THE SWEETEST DOG! but they picked the other one because of you are heartworm positive. So my shelter folks figured out a way to sponsor OVER HALF of my heartworm treatment so that the NEXT person will for sure pick me. And the next couple did come in and they both loved me and I loved their kids! But they decided to wait until the move is finished. It's crazy because everyone that meets me REALLY LIKES ME but there is always something that keeps them from taking me.
I know I look like I've had puppies before - I can't help that - people bred me too much in my little life before I got to the shelter. I know I don't bark at my kennel door to get your attention - but that's a good thing! It means I am a more calm, sweet lady. I do like to have time outside to smell the roses but as soon as see you calling to me I will run over, do a little tippy tap dance, and jump up in the air so you can catch me like the baby I think I am. (It really is the cutest thing I do but I realize not every one can catch me)
I walk well on a leash, I really try to wait to do my business outside, I love kids, I sit for a treat so pretty you won't believe it, and I have been patiently waiting for someone to see me even though I don't bark as loud as my roommates. Could you be the one I've been waiting so long for?

The Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) is the largest animal welfare organization in the state of Mississippi. HSSM’s facility was built using the nation’s leading Children’s Museums as models, with bright colors and oversized architectural sculptures. We offer: pet adoptions, foster program, return-to-owner efforts, spay/neuter and wellness services, volunteer program, pet transports, youth initiatives, a food pantry and pet retention program, an on-site thrift store, and more! In 2024, HSSM cared for over 5,000 homeless pets in house and touched over 16,000 animals in the community.
Since our incorporation in 1952, HSSM has been committed to ending pet overpopulation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. HSSM is the only Open Admissions Animal Shelter in South Mississippi, meaning we accept all animals in need, regardless of age, breed, health, or temperament. This commitment ensures that no lost pet is turned away. Oftentimes our open-admissions status in a community with a disproportionately high number of homeless pets leads to needless euthanasia of adoptable pets in our shelter HSSM has vowed to change this.
