My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Are you looking for a sidekick for all of your outdoor adventures? Meet Spruce!

Spruce is estimated to be around 1.5 years old, and he is a full-of-life guy who is always down for some fun. He is the life of the party, who is quick to make you giggle with his goofy antics and lovable personality. He is a bundle of energy who loves playing with toys and his dog friends. He is looking for an active family who can keep up with his busy body. Spruce is fully grown and weighs about 22lbs. He has tall legs, so he is bigger than you would expect for a terrier mix, but he has the adorable scruffy terrier fur.

Spruce was found as a stray and brought to a local shelter. Unfortunately, a family never came forward to claim him. The active, young pups are usually the first to start breaking down in a shelter, so we were happy to scoop him up so he could wait for his forever family in a cozy foster home.

Spruce is a fun-loving guy who is obsessed with toys - especially squeaky ones. One of his favorite activities is digging through the toy box to find the perfect toy to play with. He has learned to keep himself amused by throwing toys for himself, and it is quite fun to watch him go at it. Spruce seems to know how to play fetch and loves to race after a toy in the yard - at least until he sees another toy he wants. Spruce never seems to run out of energy and enthusiasm! He is also a big fan of belly rubs and giving kisses and is quite the little charmer. Spruce is still learning all of his basic manners, especially leash manners, and needs a family dedicated to helping him continue to learn. Luckily, he is very food-motivated and smart, so training has been going well with him.

Spruce loves other dogs and would be so happy to have another playful pup in his forever home. He has become great friends with the other medium-sized dog in his foster home, and they love to wrestle and chase each other in the backyard. Spruce could also do well as an only dog, with lots of opportunities to socialize with other active dogs. We haven't seen Spruce around cats, but we suspect his rowdy personality would probably be too much to live with kitties. Spruce could be a wonderful addition to a family with kids 10 years and older.

Spruce has been doing well with his housetraining, but may have a few accidents in a new environment and while adjusting to a new routine. Spruce has been doing well sleeping overnight in his crate and for short periods during the day. Due to his energy level, Spruce needs a home with a yard and wouldn't be a good fit to live in an apartment.

Does Spruce sound like a good match for your active family? If so, submit an application today!

The Yolo County SPCA is a private, not-for-profit, foster home-based animal rescue organization and does not have a shelter. All our animals awaiting adoption are in foster homes.

Our adoption fees help us cover the cost of spay/neuter surgery, microchip and registration, and rabies vaccination (if over 4 months of age at intake or spay/neuter) for all animals. Dogs are tested for heartworm, started on preventatives, and given a DAPP vaccination. Adult dogs are up to date on their vaccinations prior to adoption. Puppies will be current on the vaccinations appropriate to their age. The adopter is responsible for additional vaccinations as necessary after the adoption.
