He’s sweet, smart, and an absolute joy to be around. Diesel came into the care of HSSM on June 4, 2025, after being sadly surrendered by his previous owner, through no fault of his own. Since then, he's been patiently waiting to show someone just how special he is. And believe us, he is special. This handsome boy is perfection on four paws. He learns new commands faster than you can say “good boy” and shows them off with pride, especially his flawless sit. Diesel even gives “paw” when meeting new people, like he’s shaking hands to say, “Nice to meet you.” He’s a social butterfly who adores making new friends! Humans and fellow pups alike, big or small. His favorite things in the world? Treats (of course), squeaky toys, and showing off his adorable head tilts. Whether he’s training or just getting a little love, Diesel’s wiggles and award-worthy charm light up the room. Diesel is fully vetted, up to date on vaccines, and is already adopted. Diesel has tested positive for heartworms, but don't let that stop you from giving this guy the best life that he deserves. So what are you waiting for? The Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) is the largest animal welfare organization in the state of Mississippi. HSSM’s facility was built using the nation’s leading Children’s Museums as models, with bright colors and oversized architectural sculptures. We offer: pet adoptions, foster program, return-to-owner efforts, spay/neuter and wellness services, volunteer program, pet transports, youth initiatives, a food pantry and pet retention program, an on-site thrift store, and more! In 2024, HSSM cared for over 5,000 homeless pets in house and touched over 16,000 animals in the community.
Since our incorporation in 1952, HSSM has been committed to ending pet overpopulation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. HSSM is the only Open Admissions Animal Shelter in South Mississippi, meaning we accept all animals in need, regardless of age, breed, health, or temperament. This commitment ensures that no lost pet is turned away. Oftentimes our open-admissions status in a community with a disproportionately high number of homeless pets leads to needless euthanasia of adoptable pets in our shelter HSSM has vowed to change this.
