My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Name: Cruise
Age: 2 years
Breed: Border Collie mix
Size: 53.8 lbs
Special Needs: Heartworm positive (low)
Adoption Application: https://forms.gle/nuKXoMu6gjS5DhFm8
Contact: transport@hssm.org

Meet Cruise! He's one cool cat.

At 2.5 years old and about 50 pounds, Cruise is the kind of dog people dream about: housebroken, well-mannered, knows how to sit, loves people, and blends right into family life like he’s always belonged. He’s just a REALLY GOOD DOG. The kind you meet once and think, “Wow… this guy is special.”

But Cruise hasn’t had the smoothest ride. He was surrendered once by an owner who simply didn’t want him. Then he was adopted, only to be returned because the adopter’s circumstances changed - no fault of his own.
So now he’s been to the shelter not once, but twice, and while we take incredible care of our animals, no dog should ever have to see the inside of a shelter two times.

Still, Cruise hasn’t let any of it dull his shine. He’s steady, sweet, affectionate, and just a cool, easygoing guy. The kind of dog who would happily Cruise right into your heart and stay there.

He’s neutered, up to date on his basics, and ready to roll. Cruise is heartworm positive, but don’t let that stop you — our Wellness Clinic offers discounted treatment, and he’s worth every bit of it.

And here’s something extra special: A member of the community took Cruise out on a Doggy Day Out, fell in love with him, and was so moved by how wonderful he is that they sponsored his entire adoption fee just to help him find the home he deserves.

If you’re looking for a loyal companion, a best friend, a good hang, and an all-around great dog… Cruise is your guy. He’s ready for his forever family — for real this time.

More about this shelter

The Humane Society of South Mississippi (HSSM) is the largest animal welfare organization in the state of Mississippi. HSSM’s facility was built using the nation’s leading Children’s Museums as models, with bright colors and oversized architectural sculptures. We offer: pet adoptions, foster program, return-to-owner efforts, spay/neuter and wellness services, volunteer program, pet transports, youth initiatives, a food pantry and pet retention program, an on-site thrift store, and more! In 2024, HSSM cared for over 5,000 homeless pets in house and touched over 16,000 animals in the community.

Since our incorporation in 1952, HSSM has been committed to ending pet overpopulation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. HSSM is the only Open Admissions Animal Shelter in South Mississippi, meaning we accept all animals in need, regardless of age, breed, health, or temperament. This commitment ensures that no lost pet is turned away. Oftentimes our open-admissions status in a community with a disproportionately high number of homeless pets leads to needless euthanasia of adoptable pets in our shelter HSSM has vowed to change this.
