  • 4th Saturday, Roseville - Pet Food Express

All of our dogs are in foster homes and not in one single kennel location.  Adoption events is the best way to meet several of our dogs at once.

Olaf is a 9 month old male German Shepherd mix with a beautiful sable coat weighing approximately 65 pounds.   He entered the shelter as a young pup where he was readily adopted, but recently found his way back to the shelter for reasons unknown.   Despite his confusing past, his personality remains simply jolly with a warm heart caressed by his adorable ears.

One delightful feature about this boy is his ability to engage other dogs in play and chase.   His approach is curious and polite with the physical stamina to keep up with dogs much larger in size. He currently shares his foster home with a rough-playing female (see Cadence) and does well to match her style.   Once he’s had enough, he is comfortable taking a break to explore elsewhere or lay quietly indoors near his human. This boy is not that interested in toys but enjoys his Nyla bones, especially those his foster sibling is cradling. He will start pawing and display play bows to try and get her to share, but eventually accepts he has to find another to enjoy on his own.

In the home, Olaf has very good house manners where he has learned to respect boundaries and wait patiently for carrots (one of his favorite treats).   He looks forward to his daily walks where he has become accustomed to loud vehicles and common distractions along the way. His favorite activities include laying by your side and humbly soaking in affection while he buries his head in your arms. Turn down a belly rub? Never.   Occasionally he will get excited and jump upward, especially when reuniting. Although he is learning to sit and be patient for pets, take caution with children.

If you have a car adventure planned, Olaf is game to be your copilot. He is housebroken and is accustomed to dog doors. At night, he readily enters his crate where he sleeps quietly.   If you are looking for a canine companion with an endearing soul, this boy is ready to please you without disappointment. It won’t take long for him to win you over with his irresistible goofy charm.

    Cats and small critters unknown.

    Understanding Dog Levels

Please be sure you understand what a dog of this Level requires. Go to our home page for an explanation of the Dog Rating Levels. ( https://gcgsr.org/doglevels/)

    Additional Adoption Information

For more information and to see when this dog will be attending an Adoption Day, please see our Dogs page on our main website. (https://www.gcgsr.org/adopt_info.html) We operate within a reasonable driving distance from the Greater Sacramento area, the Central Valley down to Merced, and Lake Tahoe. A reasonable driving distance is determined by where one of our volunteers is willing to drive within our areas of service. That means we don't adopt out of our area, to Southern California, or out of state.

    Puppy Requirements

We have special Requirements for Adopting a Puppy and a separate Puppy Questionnaire that must be completed on puppies. Please see our Requirements for Adopting a Puppy (https://www.gcgsr.org/puppies.html) email us at info@gcgsr.org for more information.

    Thank you for visiting!

    Additional adoption info

    Adoption Fees
Our fees are $350 for Puppies (2-6 months), $300 for Adult Dogs, and $100 for Senior Dogs (9 years & up) and Special Needs Dogs who have ongoing health issues that require treatment. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered (per California State Law), vaccinated, heartworm and fecal tested clear, and most are micro-chipped.

    Home Visit
We require a home visit by one of our own volunteers because we match the home to a specific dog, and we want to meet all members of the household and all other pets at that time, and make sure that environment will work for that dog. The home must be safe and suitable for our dog, and that means we won't adopt to a home with out-of-control children or out-of-control resident dogs.

    Outside Dogs
We rarely place dogs in outside only homes. All of our dogs come out of shelters and into volunteer foster homes where they live in the house with the people. We haven't had much success re-homing them to an outside-only home after that. We believe that dogs are happier living and sleeping inside with their family pack, which has been borne out from many years of bringing dogs into rescue.

    Adoption Requirements
Our Adoption Agreement & Contract is a legal document, therefore we will only adopt to adults, and all the adults in the household must agree to getting the dog. The home must be safe and secure, and legally allowed to have a German Shepherd Dog, and be within the allowable number of dogs. We require landlord consent for renters. The entire household must be a good match for the dog, therefore we won't place a higher Level dog in a lower Level household.

    Puppies
We have special requirements and an additional questionnaire for puppies, please be sure you meet the requirements before sending in an application. Since we see so many dogs that have come out of an unsuitable environment, we want to make sure our puppies have the very best start in life. That means we won't adopt a puppy into an Outside Only home or where the puppy will be alone the majority of the time, as we don't feel that's an optimum environment to raise a happy and well-socialized dog.

    More about this rescue

Greater California German Shepherd Rescue is a 501(c)(3) public charity non-profit. We are an all-volunteer group of German Shepherd lovers dedicated to rescuing German Shepherd Dogs from at-risk and unacceptable situations and finding them permanent, loving homes with qualified owners.

We serve the communities surrounding Modesto, Merced, Greater Sacramento, and South Lake Tahoe, and occasionally parts of the North and East SF Bay area. Except for a portion of Nevada around Lake Tahoe, we don't adopt dogs out of state and rarely adopt out of our area. There are too many other German Shepherds in need of good homes in the other areas.

All of our dogs are in foster homes spread throughout our service areas. We aren't a shelter and don't have a facility. We don't take in strays, we will only deal with the dog's legal owner.
