I adopted my cat about five years ago, when she was ten years old. She was in a kennel by herself at the SPCA. In her paperwork, it said that she "pooped outside her litter box," and at the time I thought that it was due to the stress of being in a strange place. After getting her home, she pees in the litter box, but will still poop outside the box maybe once a day.
Previous to the SPCA, she lived with an older lady - that's all I know. Her name was Charley, but after I got her home, I unofficially named her Dame Maggie Smith, after the actress. She can be just a bit skittish around new people, and still a bit around me - when I feed her in the morning, I'll sit about four feet away from her. If I stand up after she starts eating, she scurries away until I settle down again. She prefers drinking from the bathtub faucet and will stand in it and meow until I turn it on to a thin stream. She's quite the cuddler, and will insist on lap time and will also prefer laying on you in bed
