Meet Top Hat — The Little Gentleman With Big Potential

Age: 2 years old
Breed: Maltipoo
Weight: 12 lbs
Coat: Nonshedding
Good with dogs: Absolutely!

Top Hat may be small, fluffy, and adorable, but let us be perfectly clear:
This charming Maltipoo needs a home where humans run the show, not him.

Who Top Hat Really Is

Top Hat is a smart, sensitive little guy who absolutely thrives when he knows someone else is confidently calling the shots. When he first came to us, he was wound tight—fearful, reactive, unsure who to trust. But with structure, leadership, and consistency, this dog transformed.

He now looks to his person for direction. He listens. He relaxes. He wants to please.
Give him rules, and he blossoms. Let him be in charge… and he’ll book a one-way ticket to Chaosville.

His Secret Sauce? A Trainer Who Cracked the Code.

Our amazing trainer quickly figured out exactly what Top Hat needs:

  • Calm but confident leadership

  • Clear direction

  • Quick corrections when needed

  • Lots of praise when he gets it right

She has taught him to accept handling, ignore his reactive impulses, and focus on his person. He is incredibly receptive and wants desperately to be a good boy — he just needs someone to show him how.

We are so committed to his success that we will waive his adoption fee if the adopter signs up for a minimum of 4 sessions with his current trainer. She’ll teach you his language and set both of you up for a lifetime of success.

Who He Needs

Top Hat needs an adopter who:
Isn’t intimidated by a dog with opinions
Can follow a trainer’s guidance
Has experience or is willing to learn
Will commit to structure, routine, and clear rules
Is confident, calm, and consistent

He is NOT a dog for someone who wants to spoil him, coddle him, or let him “just be cute.” He is not a decorative accessory. He is a dog with tremendous potential — the right owner will see him become the affectionate, funny, loyal little companion he’s meant to be.

Who He Is When He Feels Safe

With leadership and boundaries, Top Hat is:
Sweet
Loving
Playful
Dog-friendly
Attentive
A total goofball with the people he trusts

A truly magical dog has emerged now that he finally feels safe.

More about this rescue

We are passionate folks who love dogs and love people! We strive to make the most appropriate match between human and canine. Because our dogs live in foster homes we know about their temperament and personality and therefore can help families and individuals decide if the dog is a good match or not. We are excited to help people find the right pooch for them and look forward to meeting great folks and welcoming them into the DPS Family.
