My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Have you ever looked back at some of the things you did as a teenage pup and just… cringe? Be kind to yourself—you were still learning. And so was I.

Hi, I'm Ivy. I’m two and a half years old, and I’ve been at the shelter since I was nine months old. Why so long? Well, being a teenager is tough. Living with a teenager is tough. And being a teenager without a family of your own? Extra tough. I’m a smart, loving, energetic dog, and kennel life has never agreed with me.

For a while, I got to stay in a foster home, and it helped me grow into a much happier, more balanced dog. Now I’m back at the shelter—just temporarily, I hope—and I’m ready to show off everything I’ve learned. I’m about 60 lbs, fully grown, and working hard at channeling my energy and intelligence. I’ve met cats and done well with them, I like to play with other dogs, I’m focused and friendly, and I LOVE to show off my tricks. I’m a total champ at “place” and “lie down.”

Am I utterly flawless? Perfectly obedient? Unfailingly angelic? Heck no—and are YOU a perfect human? Learning is a lifelong thing for both dogs and people. I can still be a little socially awkward with dogs at first, though I enjoy them and get along once we figure each other out. And I still really struggle with the kennel environment, which is why I hope I won’t have to stay in it for long.

The good news? My foster—and my friends at Purina Farms—believe in me so much that they’ve sponsored my adoption fee.

I’m here at the shelter now, hoping to meet potential adopters as soon as possible. Please don’t wait—I’d much rather be practicing my tricks with you than spending time in a kennel.

If you’re interested in meeting me, please fill out a preliminary application at odas.org/canine and someone will contact you to schedule a visit. I can’t wait to meet my person. 💚

Their adoption process

Additional adoption info

To adopt an animal from Open Door Animal Sanctuary you must commit to provide the utmost care for our angels. We believe the perfect home is one with a lifetime commitment to the health and happiness of their adopted friend. Adequate shelter, good food, fresh water and regular veterinary care are necessities and we have one more key requirement - at least 100 kisses a day for the life of your new family member!

We screen potential adopters thoroughly before sending any our babies home. Every home goes through a homecheck and must be approved by our homecheck team before we allow our animals to be adopted. We work hard to know the personalities of our furry guests and to understand each of them so that we are prepared to help you find the best fit for your lifestyle. Our goal is to make the best match possible to ensure a happy lifetime in your home. If you're a kind and caring family looking for a pet, please come and visit us. We'll help you find the perfect match!

The adoptable pets listing here is only a partial one. It's tough to keep up pics and bios for the very large number of wonderful pets we have for you to choose. If you don't see what you're looking for or if you have a particular pet in mind, please give us a call. Just because you don't find it listed doesn't mean we don't have just the pet for you!

Our adoption area is generally a 100 mile radius of the St. Louis area. It is important for us to have the opportunity to assist people in their homes with their new pet if needed and even more critical that as a no-kill shelter, we can readily "retrieve" our friends if something happens in the future. Thanks for understanding.

Our adoption fee is $120. That includes all necessary shots up to the date of adoption, spaying/neutering, wormings, flea/tick preventative, and microchip. Our cats are tested for feline leukemia and FIV (feline aids). Dogs are tested for heartworms and receive heartworm preventatives. We provide our animals with lots of socialization with people and with each other. One word of warning - our babies are frequently spoiled by our animal-loving staff and volunteers. We try to make sure that we provide them with everything we can - but WE NEED YOU to provide a LOVING FUR-EVER HOME

Go meet their pets

We generally house more than 250 cats and kittens and 90 to 100 dogs and puppies. Please come and visit us between 10:00 and 4:00 any day of the week (holidays too from 10 to 2!) You can call us at 636-671-3643 for directions! We know you'll like what you see. Our facility has large indoor/outdoor kennels for the dogs and large outdoor pens for exercise on nice days. Our cat areas are largely cageless, so you'll have plenty of wonderful kitties vying for attention on your lap!

We have wonderful cats and kittens 24/7 waiting for you to come to the Luv A Pet Center in the Chesterfield PetSmart and give them a new home. Please come and meet them - we know you'll want to adopt one. They're not in cages and are loads of fun to visit!
