Ranger #5 | 6-Month-Old Black Mouth Cur | Playful, Bright, and Learning the World
Ranger is a bright, energetic 6-month-old Black Mouth Cur who has come a long way after a tough start to life. Taken from his mom too early and later surrendered to a crowded shelter, he was scared and unsure of the world when he arrived—but with love, routine, and patience, he’s blossoming into a sweet, affectionate companion who’s ready for a family committed to helping him continue to grow.
Ranger is mostly house trained, uses the doggie door, and enjoys his walks—he may pull a bit, but he’s learning. He settles nicely when crated and does best that way when home alone, simply because he’s still young and curious and may chew on things he shouldn’t if left to his own devices. With guidance and continued training, he’s showing great improvement.
Socially, Ranger is still building confidence. He can be unsure when meeting new dogs and people, and his initial barking or growling is his way of expressing nervousness, not aggression. With slow introductions and reassurance, he relaxes quickly—especially with female dogs and when meeting in neutral, outdoor spaces. He has even done well with young children once he understands they’re friendly, though calmer interactions suit him best.
Ranger is highly food-motivated, smart, and eager to learn. He already knows several basic commands and responds well to redirection. He thrives with structure and is happiest when he has a job to do—long walks, fetch, tug, puzzle toys, and training sessions help channel his puppy energy in positive ways. After playtime, he becomes an affectionate cuddlebug who loves belly rubs, resting his head on you, or curling up in your lap for a nap. He also entertains himself with durable chew toys and his beloved ice cubes.
His perfect home would include an active, fairly submissive female dog who enjoys play, along with an adopter who can offer patience, continued socialization, and consistent training. Ranger bonds deeply with his person and becomes a devoted shadow once he feels safe. With the right match, he’ll grow into a loyal, loving, and wonderfully rewarding companion.
If you and the dog are a good match then we'll connect you with our dog's foster parents to chat more in-depth. If both you and the foster agree that the dog is a good fit then a meet and greet is scheduled. We require applicants' dogs to meet ours to ensure they get along. We'll ask you to read and sign our adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee to complete the adoption when it comes time. Our adoption fees help cover the costs of saving more lives! A home visit will be scheduled within one week of your new pet going home with you.
The adoption fee for this pet is $450 (includes a $50 refundable puppy training deposit). Our adoption fee covers the following:
Spay/neuter
Microchip
DAPP vaccinations as age-appropriate for the dog.
Rabies vaccinations as age-appropriate for the dog.
Adopters shall be responsible for all vaccinations after adoption.
Please fill out an adoption application by clicking here . Please give us 48 hours to review your application and respond to you. (Remember to check your spam folder for our emails!) We want our pets to go to a lifelong new home, so thank you for your patience during the adoption process!
Please email dogs@arrcolorado.org for more information, as we can't accept calls.
PLEASE NOTE: The breed listed is the information we've received from the shelter. Shelters usually guess at the breed, so there is no guarantee, as we don't DNA test our foster pets. Here is some interesting info on breed identification: https://arrcolorado.org/category/puppy-dog-tips/
