My personality

My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We adopt locally to the Twin Cities metro. We are not able to coordinate distance placements. Apply at Adoption

Pinkerton is the sweetest, most loving boy! He will thrive in a senior-loving single-story home, or a home where he does not need to manage stairs to be with his person and to go outside. He has been dearly loved all his life, he will be your best friend! Read more:

Age: 11 yrs young!

Size: 50 lbs. on his way to a goal weight under 30 lbs.

Temperament: Pinkerton is a very happy boy! He just craves attention and will take endless pets as he gazes at you lovingly. He loves everyone he has met!

Fence: We will consider a home without a fence with a family who will commit to keeping Pinkerton safely leashed 100% of the time for his lifetime whenever he is outside of a securely fenced area. Pinkerton has experience eliminating while on a leash.

Dogs: Pinkerton gets along with the other dogs in his foster home, and lived with a Shih-Tzu previously.

Cats: Unknown. There are no cats in his foster home.

Kids: No kids in his foster home and it is unknown if Pinkerton has had exposure to children. Due to pain and stiffness that is likely weight-related, Pinkerton would do best in an adult home, or a home with an older child who understands appropriate interactions with an older dog.

Crate Use: Pinkerton uses a crate when transported in the car, and has free run of the house in his foster home. He sometimes sleeps in his crate, which has a bath mat to assist him in getting up.

Housetrained: Yes

Responds to Cues: Pinkerton does well with routine and predictability. It can take him a few days to get used to a new environment. He’ll do most anything you ask for a treat!

Leash Walks: Currently leash walks should be short to prevent further pain and stiffness. As Pinkerton approaches his goal weight, leash walks will be much more comfortable and enjoyable for him. He likes walks!

Car Rides: Car rides have been to go to the vet and groomer. Pinkerton is crated for transport for his safety.

Activity Level: Low, as expected for his current mobility level.

Barking: Pinkerton is quiet for a Sheltie - a plus! He will bark with excitement about food.

Health: While in rescue, Pinkerton has had an exam, bloodwork, thyroid test, tick screen, and heartworm test. Pinkerton is on Carprofen daily for pain and stiffness, likely weight-related. He is able to do 2 or 3 steps but it will be some time before he can do more than that. We are hoping that, as he approaches his goal weight, he will be more mobile and regain strength in his back legs through exercises. He is able to walk on a hard floor but struggles to get up when lying on a hard floor. He has fewer issues when on a rug or carpet.

Pinkerton will be such a joy in your life! He is perfect for someone with few or no stairs, who wants an easygoing, adoring boy to love and to enjoy slow, leisurely walks together, and who can support him toward his goal weight so he can be as healthy as possible.

Their adoption process

1.

Submit Application

Please read the Sheltie's bio before applying for information on fence requirement, the dog's age, size, personality, health, and fee.

2.

Home Check

A visit to your home by our volunteers helps us to know which dog is best suited for your family/lifestyle. We will need to view your fence.

3.

Meet the Pet

If we currently have a Sheltie in rescue who may be a match for you, a visit to the foster home to meet the Sheltie will be scheduled.

4.

Sign Adoption Contract

If the foster family and potential adopter feel it's the right match for the foster dog, the adoption day and transport is scheduled.

Additional adoption info

Please read our Frequently Asked Questions at FAQ prior to emailing us.

If you are interested in adopting a Sheltie, the first step is to submit the application. All of our Shelties reside in foster homes. We will contact your references and visit with you at your home. Our process helps us to know which of the Shelties in our program may be a good match for your family, your home set-up and your lifestyle. Upon adoption, the contract is signed.

In most cases, a secure wood, vinyl, or chain link fence, with secure gates and no gaps, and with direct access from the house is required for the dogs in our program. Shelties are a high flight risk, and many of the dogs we take into our program may be shy. When we have a Sheltie in our program that can go to a home without a fence, it will be noted in the dog's bio. For ALL the dogs in our program, our adoption contract requires that the dog will ALWAYS be on a leash whenever the dog is not in a securely fenced area.

Our adoption fees are based on the Sheltie's age: $450 for dogs 0-3 years, $350 for dogs 4-8 years, $250.00 for dogs 9 & older. All our Shelties are altered and appropriate vet care is provided while they are in foster care. Our veterinary expenses generally exceed the adoption fee. Donations are always appreciated!

Go meet their pets

We will arrange a meeting with a foster Sheltie once an application has been processed if we have an available match. Please read our adoption Frequently Asked Questions at FAQ prior to emailing us.
