Belle is looking for an experience foster home that can administer eye drops, oral meds and get her to her follow up appointments.
Not currently available for adoption as we work on getting her healthy. Watch for the “🥀” to turn into “🌹” to indicate she is available for adoption.

Belle was found outside by a Good Samaritan last week who reached out to us after they were unable to locate her previous owners. Based on her physical condition .. that may be for the best. Thanks to one of our medical fosters who made an emergency quarantine space, we were able to bring her into our care.
We are not sure how much of what we are seeing happened before she was dumped vs after, but Belle presented with multiple serious health concerns. The mange, podo-dermatitis (aka bumblefoot), and hair loss are indicative of improper flooring, being left soiled for long periods, and malnutrition. Her right foot is swollen to nearly twice its normal size with an infected wound on the underside.
She also has trauma consistent with being dropped or surviving a predator attack. Her left eye is bulging and has a corneal ulcer. Her left upper incisor is broken. She has a head drift and is lethargic. Her kidney values show dehydration and she didn’t poop for nearly 12hrs when she first arrived. Thankfully she is now eating and drinking like she is making up for lost time.
Her prognosis is guarded but promising. She got Revolution and ivermectin for the mange and her skin already looks better. We are hoping to save her eye. Dr. Pardini performed a temporary tarsorrhaphy, which is a partial eyelid closure, that protects the cornea and helps ulcers heal. For the next 3 weeks she will receive 2 types of eye drops, an antibiotic, and an NSAID, 3 times a day as well as oral antibiotics and pain meds. If the ulcer heals the tarsorrhaphy will be reversed. If not, she will need an enucleation.
Despite everything she has endured, Belle is incredibly sweet and takes her meds without much fuss. Due to her poor body condition it is difficult to estimate her true age, but she appears to be just a year old or younger. She weighs only 600 grams.

SOS FL Animal Rescue is a non-profit rescue for rabbits and guinea pigs. We are animal lovers who are experienced rabbit and guinea pig owners. We both fostered small animals with other rescues for years before meeting each other and deciding to start our own rescue so that more rabbits and guinea pigs could be saved. We take in all rabbits and guinea pigs, including unwanted animals, seniors, and medical cases.
