From Marcel's foster:
One of my current fosters. I am obsessed with him! His name is Marcel because he's a little warrior that fought to survive outside in the hottest triple digit days of summer with little help from people in the Modesto neighborhood he was found in. Marcel was brought to me on August 10th when he was near death, emaciated from dehydration, malnutrition, and flea anemia; too weak to eat or do much of anything but lay down. I gave Marcel a dawn bath to get the fleas off him and the water turned bright red with his blood. Marcel weighed just 1.3 pounds and was 11 or 12 weeks old! The trapper that brought him to me thought he was 5 weeks old but his legs, tail, and ears were quite long and that of an older kitten. I knew he was much older with extreme emaciation, his bones were jutting out all over him. I was very worried and scared for him and didn't know if I could save him. I decided I was going to try my best. I syringe fed Marcel 5-6 times a day for over a week to get him strong and eating again. I took him to the vet and Marcel's bloodwork showed he was borderline needing a blood transfusion with severe anemia. They gave him dewormer, Capstar, Sulcrafate to help settle his stomach because he threw up while there and high calorie food to syringe feed him. I got him tested for all the serious feline diseases and he was negative. Even though he was dehydrated they didn't want to give fluids because it would dilute the little blood he had. There wasn't much they could do, he just needed to eat to try to build his RBCs and hematocrit back up!
Slowly through syringe feeding, Marcel started to gain strength back and how overjoyed I was when he wanted to eat the canned food/formula mixture on his own several days in and didn't need the syringe anymore! Then he started wanting to play with toys and acting like a regular kitten, it was a miracle! Now Marcel is a healthy weight, eats like a , and runs and plays like any kitten. Marcel has a fever coat due to the severe anemia and malnutrition his poor body endured. It looks so unique but it will likely grow out to solid black in a few months. Marcel is the sweetest cutest guy with so much character, he makes me laugh and brings me joy every single day. Marcel was so worth saving as all cats are and I'm so glad I could help him in time and when he needed it! Now to get him a forever home!
