My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Thomas Thomas Update!

Our new hound officially has a name: Thomas… except the vet didn’t know his foster mom’s last name is also Thomas. So yes, he is now Thomas Thomas, and honestly, it fits him perfectly. (at least until he’s adopted and takes a new name!)

Now that we’ve seen him in person, we think he is a beautiful treeing walker coonhound.

Thomas had his full vet workup today, and here’s where things stand:

He actually looks really good considering the shape he arrived in. He’s starting an antibiotic for puncture wounds, and his tear-duct test came back low, so he’ll be on medication for dry eye. He also has a cherry eye/prolapsed third eyelid. There’s concern that surgically removing it could cause the eye to recess into the socket, so we’re moving very cautiously.

Right now, the vet does not believe he has vision in that eye. He started a steroid today to help with inflammation, and when he’s neutered next week, the vet will be able to get a much clearer look at the eye while he’s under anesthesia. He will likely be referred to an ophthalmologist to determine whether the eye can be saved or if removal is the safest route.

The fantastic news is he is heartworm negative!

This is going to be a costly medical journey, but Thomas Thomas is so deserving. We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who has already donated to his care, and we’re still very much in need of support as we continue his treatment.

More about this rescue

Hound Rescue is always in need of foster homes. We do not have a shelter so our ability to rescue is limited only by the number of families willing to take in a beagle in need. If interested go to http://houndrescue.com and click on "How to Foster."

Hound Rescue started in Austin, Texas in 1998. We are a small group of individuals who foster dogs in our homes. Hound Rescue also provides placement assistance to both shelters and others who need to find homes for hounds who for whatever reason have become stray.

Most of our animals come from high-kill facilities where they were scheduled to be euthanized. Because of the huge numbers of unwanted dogs, Hound Rescue Texas can only take owner surrenders on a limited basis as space permits in our foster home network.
