My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.

GGBR’s own New Years Baby! Meet Otis, born on 01/01/2025! You’ll never forget his birthday!

Otis came to GGBR as an owner surrender from the young man who had lovingly raised him since he was 8 weeks old but as Otis got older, his separation anxiety issues did not sit well with the neighbors.  Since coming into GGBR and being in a foster home with other dogs, he’s doing much better with this behavior. Otis is a talker tho, & has a beautiful deep Basset voice. He loves to bark when he’s playing with other dogs & when he sees something he wants when he’s walking. His foster family is working on this behavior but some training is still needed.

Speaking of walking, his foster family has always heard about “flat bassets” but never experienced one, until Otis… when he’s done walking or wants to stop, he just flops down… & he’s big guy to get up & moving again, 55 lbs & still has some filling out to do!

Otis is a sweetheart tho. He quickly learned how to use the doggie door & learned about sneaking up onto his foster family’s bed to snuggle at night. He loves to snuggle on the couch & chair with humans & other dogs as well! He takes treats very gently & is not super food motivated (very unusual for a Basset).

But in everything other aspect he is all Basset from his long silky ears, beautiful black & tan coat, deep brown eyes that can melt your heart, gorgeous big feet & his happy tail! He loves to play with his foster brother & sister bassets & is very enamored with his foster bloodhound brother. He’s also very gentle with cats, occasionally chasing them.

Otis is neutered, microchipped & up to date on all his vaccinations! He’s ready to find his furever home & celebrate his birthday with you!!!

Otis is being fostered in the Sacramento area but his foster family is easily talked into a road-trip for him to meet people!!

Speaking of traveling, Otis does occasionally get car sick & can cry in the car, but hopefully he’ll outgrow this with lots of love & positive reinforcement!

Otis would love a furever home with another playful dog & a patient family that will continue his training & able to work with his barking & leash manners/walking/flat basset behaviors! He’s a sweetheart & will be your loyal friend & companion!

Additional adoption info

All of our paperwork is on our website. (http://www.ggbassetrescue.org/info/adoption) but we expect an application form, a home check visit, possible reference check and an adoption donation. All this helps to ensure that the right basset hound is chosen for you, to match your lifestyle and circumstances, as you will become a "forever" home!

We do not have a specific kennel or shelter location to take our dogs to. We are so widespread that we just go from foster home to forever home.

More about this rescue

Golden Gate Basset Rescue rescues Basset Hounds from abusive, abandoned and unwanted situations across the whole of Northern California. We were formed in 2005 after operating for nearly ten years under the Northern California Basset Hound Club.

Today, Golden Gate Basset Rescue, Inc. is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization. We exist solely on donations.

Golden Gate Basset Rescue takes orphaned bassets into foster care, usually in volunteer homes, where they are loved and cared for until permanent, forever homes are found. We provide veterinary care, which includes > necessary vaccinations, spaying and neutering, heartworm, flea and tick prevention.

Our wonderful volunteers spend time with the dogs to evaluate them, deal with any behavioral issues, and restore them to full health with good food and love.
