My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dickens is an estimated one year old poodle mix who came into our care after completing a 10-day stray hold alongside his friend Theo. When no one came forward for them, a kind finder made sure they didn’t enter an open intake shelter. Theo has since been adopted, and Dickens is ready to find his forever home.

Dickens is currently thriving in a foster home where he’s learning routines and building confidence each day. He has done well with dogs, men, women, and children. While he can be a little shy at first, he warms up quickly and becomes very loving. He loves attention, enjoys being included, and often follows his foster dog siblings around while keeping watch over the neighborhood.

He is working on potty training and typically just needs a few days to adjust in a new environment before settling into a routine. Colder weather has caused some setbacks, but he continues to make progress. Dickens is also learning kennel training. He does well overnight and settles nicely when left for a full workday, though he can struggle during the day if he can see or hear you nearby, he simply doesn’t want to miss out. Can you blame him?

Dickens loves toys and enrichment activities such as puzzle toys and snuffle mats. He has shown excellent manners and has not displayed any destructive chewing, sticking to toys that belong to him. He enjoys the company of other dogs, though we don’t believe another dog in the home is required as long as his adopter is committed to continued socialization. This will also ensure that he stays tired and fulfilled!

He is friendly, affectionate, and enjoys being part of the family without showing signs of separation anxiety.

Dickens is currently being fostered in Chicago and is available for adoption within three hours of the city. He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, microchipped, and current on flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives. If you are interested in being considered as a potential home for Dickens, please apply directly. We expect applications to close quickly. If you have any questions prior to applying, please email adopt@chicagorescueauthority.org.

Additional adoption info

Every dog is different: personality, temperament, energy, comfort with kids and other animals, medical needs and more. We take all these factors into consideration when making a forever-home match. We are careful about the placements we make. We do our best to match the right dog with the right adoptive home because we want this to be the pet’s permanent home. These steps ensure that we have all the information needed to make the best placement for you or your family.

More about this rescue

At Chicago Rescue Authority, our mission is to create a compassionate world where every animal is treated with love, respect, and dignity. We are dedicated to educating the public about the adverse realities of the mass-production industry for puppies, raising awareness about responsible pet adoption and ownership, and actively working towards reducing the overpopulation of dogs in shelters.

Our promise to Chicago is to build our rescue on the tenets of teamwork, education and compassion. We will listen to the concerns and ideas of those around us and be ready to grow alongside this rescue and this mission.

Volunteers, fosters, donors and adopters will be the backbone of this organization, just like every other animal welfare non-profit. We will be hosting a variety of fundraisers and mixers throughout the year aimed at building our support network. We can’t wait to meet all the animals whose lives we are going to change!
