My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Pocus the Holiday Pup!

Breed: Yellow Labrador Retriever Age: 18 weeks Weight: 25 lbs Location: Hart County, GA
Santa’s sleigh might run on reindeer, but this year he’s got a bouncy yellow lab named Pocus helping spread cheer. At just 18 weeks old, this sweet boy is basically a stocking stuffed with joy—wiggly, playful, and ready to unwrap life one squeaky toy at a time.

Personality
Sweet as sugar cookies: affectionate and snuggly.
Puppy mischief: curious, goofy, and learning the “nice list” rules.
Bouncy energy: zooms and romps like he’s training for Santa’s sleigh team.
Runner extraordinaire: loves to dash around like he’s chasing snowflakes, then curl up for a long winter’s nap.

Holiday Spirit
Pocus’s favorite holiday movie? A Christmas Story. This little elf will happily hop into his matching pink bunny jammies, ears and all, and snuggle up for the show. And while Ralphie dreamed of a Red Ryder BB gun, Pocus is perfectly content with tasty holiday snacks under the tree.

Health
Pocus has a mild case of megaesophagus. That means his esophagus doesn’t always move food down as smoothly as it should. Severe cases sometimes need special feeding chairs (called Bailey chairs), but here’s the merry news: Pocus doesn’t need one. He eats happily from a slow feeder, shows no symptoms, and Dr. Terry says many mild cases like his often resolve as puppies grow.

Adoption Details
Pocus is being fostered in Hart County, GA and is available for adoption within Georgia.

Additional adoption info

Our mission is to find the best possible homes for the animals in our care. Many of them have been through severe hardship, mistreatment or neglect, and that makes it even more important that we do our best for them. This means that we have to have guidelines because not every adopter is right for every animal. We try to do right by every person who comes our way looking for a new family pet. But sometimes we have to say “no” to a potential adopter. Our animals do not have a say in where they go; since we speak for those who have no voice, we must do it well. Our rejection of an adoption application is no reflection on the adopter. Everyone who wants to adopt an animal from a shelter or rescue group is special because they open their homes to those in need. But, while we try to meet the needs of everyone, our clients are the animals. They have no one else. We appreciate your understanding.

More about this rescue

The mission of Hounds in Pounds (HIP), is to end the daily killing of thousands of adoptable dogs in the United States. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New Jersey and Georgia and we rely 100% on donations.

HIP has a multi-faceted approach to achieving our mission, combining rescue, adoption, spay/neuter outreach and public education. Dogs rescued by Hounds in Pounds are transported to private veterinarians for proper medical treatment, where they are vetted, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, micro-chipped and tested for heartworm before being placed into new, loving homes. We work as a team, communicating from sunrise to sundown to manage the many moving pieces that make our work successful.

Each dog we pull to safety is a member of our family and is treated with the utmost love and respect. We are a lifeline for thousands of dogs that otherwise wouldn’t stand a chance. Many of the dogs we rescue are cases that no one else will take, as our motto at HIP is to “never say never”. To be clear, we are working for them. These dogs are our heroes, and we look to them for hope, inspiration and sometimes the strength to keep going. We also consider our followers, donors, adopters, rescue partners and the rescue community a direct extension of our team. Without each of these moving parts, Hounds in Pounds wouldn’t be able to do what we do.

As one can imagine, the costs associated with running an operation of this magnitude are extraordinary. We fulfill our mission by collaborating with local shelters, veterinarians, boarding facilities, transporters, and local businesses, and through the generosity of donors and supporters. It is thanks to our dedicated volunteers and the benevolent donations of our HIP family of supporters that any of this is possible.
