My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Elphaba! A truly magical pup. Elphaba came to us shy and sensitive, unsure of the world and her place in it. With patience and kindness, she has begun to blossom into a loyal, affectionate companion. She feels deeply and forms meaningful connections, and when she chooses you, she does so wholeheartedly.

She’s done well in foster homes with both dogs and cats, though she is still a puppy learning how to dance through life and needs supervision. Elphaba knows how to be calm and polite in a home but when the moment strikes, chaos reigns (very briefly). Her enthusiasm can be a lot for some older or low-energy pets, so she’ll do best with guidance, training, and people who appreciate a little flair.

Elphaba is quick to learn and eager to please. She mastered “sit” very quickly and responds beautifully to praise and affection, she truly lights up when you’re happy with her. She’s also a natural athlete, with joyful hops and jumps that hint at future potential in agility or other active enrichment.

Potty training is well underway, with regular outings she should continue to succeed.

Elphaba remembers how she’s treated and can be cautious with those who have broken her trust, but kindness goes a long way with this girl. Once you’re in her circle, she’s affectionate, loyal, and all yours.

If you are ready for a little drama, a lot of heart, and a wicked loyal best friend, Elphaba is ready too.

More about this shelter

The Humane Society of North Central Florida was created in 2018 when the leadership of the Alachua County Humane Society, Gainesville Pet Rescue, and Helping Hands Pet Rescue decided to permanently join forces. By becoming the Humane Society of North Central Florida, our organizations were able to effectively streamline services for pets and pet owners, eliminate any duplication of services, maximize our community’s resources, and improve the life-saving abilities of the entire region.

Our founding organizations have been dedicated to serving pets in Alachua County for more than 40 years. The Humane Society of North Central Florida is a limited intake, no-kill animal rescue shelter. The animals in our facility are transferred from open-intake and/or managed admission municipal shelters across North Central Florida. The Humane Society of North Central Florida is an independent, local 501(c)(3) organization. As such, we do not receive funding from federal agencies, nor are we affiliated with any other state or national organizations such as the Humane Society of the United States or the ASPCA.
