My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Mateo came to the shelter after a house fire made it impossible for his owner to keep him. This sudden and traumatic change has been especially hard on him, and he’s still trying to make sense of his new environment.
According to his previous owner, he enjoys playing with other dogs and does well with kids. He is sensitive by nature and can become anxious around loud noises or when there are a lot of people around. In the shelter setting, Mateo is understandably scared and fearful, but he responds best to calm, slow movements and gentle voices.

Mateo may thrive in a quiet, low-traffic home with adopters who understand shy or fearful dogs and are willing to give him time to decompress. A calm environment and positive reinforcement will help him build confidence.

BEHAVIOR
12/21 Staff: In the back corner averting gaze and trembling. Ate offered treats when I walked away to get a cart. Avoidant and tolerant of leash. Walked front feet onto cart, then paused for a few seconds, then brought his back feet to the cart as well. I took a step away and he leaped off unexpectedly.

Walked through the hallways and kennels, eyes starting, tail tightly talked, ears back.

Brought into the behavior office, refusing treats, tucked tail, avoidant, and tolerant of me, placing a calming collar on him.
Head low, hunched body, whale eye.
12/20 staff: attempted to remove Mateo from his kennel. he was pressed against the side of the kennel with ears to the side. he had wide eyes and a trembling body. he did not want to come forward as one door was open. i gave him some hot dogs to which he came to lick them. i offered him my hadn't to sniff but he lip licked. another handler came to take him for transport and tossed a loop lasso to secure him. she was not able to get him out as he was too fearful and she did not want to pick him up due to his body language (ears back, trembling, wide eyes). once i opened the kennel a bit more to try and see if he'd move, he tried darting out of the kennel. I was not able to remove the leash due to his stress levels and left it on for now - will attempt taking it out with some time for him to relax.
12/19 Staff: ACA open door to clean kennel and dog darted out and ran, wedged himself in the corner in the lab. When attempting to approach the dog air snapped at the ACA. Dog was refusing food, got a towel on the dog and was able to pick up and place in kennel. Dog was trembling, ears back, fur brow, with worried wide eyes.
